Perfect rye starter!
Worked absolutely perfectly. Since I grind my own rye flour, I wanted a sourdough starter that would give me the ability to use rye instead of wheat flour. This system did the trick perfectly. I've been using the starter I built for over a month now (I make bread every week) and I've never had a bit of problem with it. I will say that I was a bit scared at first when I started out. I was worried that I had used too much water at the beginning. The first steps tell you 2 tablespoons of flour to 2 tablespoons of water. The instructions say that it should be like a good pancake batter. The initial mix was really dry, so I added more water and was terrified when nothing happened after the first two feedings. By the time I was at the 1/2 cup stage though, things were merrily bubbling along. My first onion dill rye loaves turned out beautifully. This starter was strong enough that I only needed 1 cup of wheat flour to 2 cups of rye. Yes, I like my breads very dense and filling. Already I've split off the starter for my daughter-in-law, so she can bake with it as well. Overall, this is a great starter kit and I would recommend it to my friends. It works very well with home ground flour and doesn't seem to need store bought ones.

works perfectly, very active!
i recommend this product, works great! very nice sourness. at first i did not get it to activate at room temp, but after putting it in a large cooler with an adjustable aquarium filter (bought for $16 at local pet store), it came to life beautifully. it definitely needs at least 75 degrees, 80 is better. i am about to make my first bread from it, and will update with the results. (i am a seasoned sourdough bread maker from HI where we do not need to worry about the temp, but moved to no cal with a much colder climate. i have every confidence this will work well now that i know how to get it to come alive in a cooler climate).

Not working as promised
Not having much luck with this starter starter. I am a fairly experienced sourdough baker so starting and maintaining a starter is not new to me. I have followed the directions and after a week, I am seeing very little activity or bubbling in my jars. The only reason I tried this brand was because I could get it much faster than another brand I'd used before that had worked great. That was a mistake.

Get one pack and keep on baking!
I bought this several years ago and my sourdough started gets used a few times a month, it is a terrific product, nice flavor and very robust! I use it for bread and focaccia.

OK in a pinch.
I got this to try per a recommendation from friends. It worked OK, but I'll not be using it again. I'll go back to my old method that takes a bit longer.

Perfect for beginners
The starter activated within days and I was able to make my first sourdough loaf just two weeks after starting. I feed using rye flour and made a loaf also using rye flour and it turned out great. The taste was good and the starter is still going strong. I feed it once a week when not baking with it and keep it in the fridge the rest of the time. The price did seem a little high upfront but considering that you can keep a starter indefinitely as long as you take care of it properly it's a great deal. I will say however that the size of the starter the instructions tell you to keep is very excessive if you're not baking a lot with it and you will end up getting a lot of wastage, and this is why I took one star off. I reduced the size to just 1 tablespoon each of starter, flour, and water whenever I feed it and it's great for maintenance, and I can just build up when I plan to bake. All in all I think this is a great starter and is perfect for beginners who don't want to go through the hassle of making their own starter from scratch.

Not a healthy starter
UPDATE: company issued a full refund! Awesome customer service. Starter went moldy after 2 feedings. Safe to say this was a waste of money.

Quick, and quicker! =)
I received my sourdough starter exactly 2 days after I ordered it, given I have free 2 day prime shipping but I ordered it on a Saturday and got it the following Monday! The culture was easy to start and I didn't have to wait 3-5 days to see the culture start doubling after the initial startup inoculation. The first day I fed it 1 cup flour, 1/2 cup water it doubled and starting spilling out my 1 quart mason jar, so I would say this culture is quite vigorous! I have yet to bake my first loaf with the starter but I'm planning on using it for making 100% rye sourdough loafs. I think it will be a good starter to use. Thanks Cultures for Health! ๐

Consistently better than homemade.
I have the San Fran sourdough and now this one. Homemade starters are only as tasty as the bacteria in your kitchen environment or present in your flours, and modern kitchens are so full of cleaners and are so infrequently used for baking etc that they just don't have what it takes to make a great starter. The same goes for modern flour mills. There is a reason that artisanal bakers will travel the world and pay a lot of money for a brilliant tasting culture. Homemade starters may add sourness, but they will never give as complex a flavour. These ones are not like an expensive European import, but they are consistently very tasty, and I'd recommend them to any home baker.

Mold after 4 day, not working...
I bought this sourdough starter, and mold appeared after only four days. The instructions were unclear, making the process confusing. Very disappointed to have paid so much for a product that did not work. Would not recommend.

Mine didnโt work
My starter went moldy. It may have been my own fault for not feeding it proper.
