what does a 3 slot motor opposed to a 2 slot motor mean?

My guess is how it mounts in the tube. Should be able to count slots in yours. I am guessing they are either 180 degrees apart for a 2 slot and 120 degrees apart on a 3 slot.

Where do you get install directions and what way does the clip go in?

Check out carefree's website for support/install guides for Marquee awnings... As for the clip, the one-way gear (the silver end piece) should be positioned so the flat side is facing outward. The clip fits into the slot and holds the one-way gear in place, with the other side of the clip pointing 90 degrees outward... internet searches should return some pictures the will help visualize what I am describing. The motor includes a diagram, but it's not as good as the installation guide for the whole awning (which goes into good detail about the motor).
