Should it?** A: If you leave the heavy ceramic plates on the cover, it will stay up; once you take them off, it changes the balance. I have found that if I take "off" all the plates, silver service etc, the top does stay up. **Q: Can the blanket be machine washed?** A: Launder it in the washing machine in cold or warm water, on a gentle or delicate setting. Not only does it look cool, but it's built sturdy and comes with all the accessories (silverware, plates, cups, & blanket). The inside is a little tight, but it's a good size if you're looking to have a light lunch/snack. The one drawback I noticed is with the blanket - it's a bit small, especially considering it is supposed to be for 4 people. Also, it's nearly impossible to refold it in a way that fits back into the basket. Luckily, neither of those are a deal breaker for me. I'll likely purchase a larger blanket and carry it outside of the basket. All in all, I think this was a great purchase.
