SOUND SYSTEM CULTURE FROM THE SEVENTIES WITH LEE PERRY.
"The speaker boxes, often painted up, vibrated and rattled as the music boomed out and the amplifiers glowed red and gave off hand warming levels of heat and smelt of cooking dust and dirt."This is the latest release in a series from Pressure Sounds (55+ minutes) that focuses on lesser known and/or rare tracks from Lee Perry. Everything here (except tracks 1 and 2) were recorded at Perry's Black Ark Studios in 1974/1977. Track 1 is from Dynamics Studio in 1973, and Track 2 was recorded at Randy's in 1971. Perry used a changing set of musicians that included Sly, Robbie, Ernest Raglin, Chinna Smith, Augustus Pablo, Winston Wright, Skully, Sticky, Theophilus Beckford, Bobby Ellis, Vin Gordon, and others. Players on Track 2 include Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, Familyman, Sticky, and a few others. The sound varies a bit (all tracks are from vinyl), similar to other Perry sets in this series. But the less than pristine sound that audiophiles dislike, I think adds some authenticity to the overall sound and feel of the recording. To each his own.Included here is a 12" mix from George Faith with a smooth vocal, with the rest all previously unreleased mixes or tracks. There's some nice things like Joy White's "Lay Besides You" (sic) with Perry later dropping White's vocal and adding Susan Cadogen's vocal for her album. "Big Bad Skank" from The Upsetters, who are also heard on a dub plate mix of "Sun Is Shining", "Police And Dub", "Devil's Dub Plate", and a couple of other tracks. Augustus Pablo & The Upsetters are together for "Keep On Moving", plus "Jah I" with Perry and The Upsetters. There's also a nice atmospheric track, "Along The Way", by Noel Robinson along with a dub version by The Upsetters. But everything here is of good quality for fans of Lee Perry. If you're familiar with previous Pressure Sounds sets like "Sound System Scratch", "The Return of Sound System Scratch", and "The Sound Doctor", then you have an idea of what to expect on this new set--especially the sound. For Lee Perry fans (like me) this is another collection that's a welcome addition to my Perry music shelf. With remixes of well known tunes, and rarely/never heard (except by a few hundred people who attended the sound system clashes back then) this is another vital look at more of Scratch's work. This has the sound and feel of the era, especially something like "Ethiopia Land", by Peter & Paul. And check out "Groovy Situation", by Keith Rowe & The Upsetters--an unreleased mix that's more proof of Perry's talent in the studio.
