Informative Book with Nice Patterns
I purchased this book on a whim because the price was right, there were nice pictures and I like vintage style but don't want to just recreate vintage patterns. I have to saw that I'm very happy that I did! I agree with another reviewer, when I received the book I spent an hour reading it, looking at all the details and admiring the patterns. Yes, you have to know how to sew to use the patterns (and they require a lot of paper)... but the patterns really look wonderful. I just received the book so I haven't actually made one yet but the designs are spot on, in that they are vintage but can easily be updated. Plus, the vintage designs are ones I haven't been able to find from other pattern makers. I have already started planning projects from this book. (I simply love the flapper dress pattern). Also, there really are 15 different patterns in the book. I was nervous that it would be only 5 patterns with 3 variations for each (similar to the BurdaStyle sewing handbook), so it's a great deal, $17 for 15 patterns!

Good, not a research book but worth reading
Cute book with some good tidbits on the history of fashion. This is not a book to add to your research library but it's worth looking at.The patterns included in the book (not the CD) require you know something about pattern drafting but if you are an intermediate or adventurous newbie sewer, you'll figure them out. I haven't tried the CD patterns yet because I hate printing out hundreds of pages and taping them together. The chapters on construction are a very good reference for fundamentals if you do not have one.I liked how Jo Barnfield included "Then" and "Now" photos. I made a collage of one of my favorite sets of photos.

Fun Sewing book
I have only looked and read through the book so far, but I like what I've seen so far.I like seeing the old style and pattern vs. the new modern version. They tell what types of fabrics were used back then vs. now etc.

How fun
They have a wide range of patterns in this book, some are not my style, but I adored the whole outline of it all. I will be making some of these clothes.

They did not state the CD was not included with the book.
Their description neglected to inform the buyer the CD was not included with the book. This rendered the purchase worthless to any buyer. I am very disappointed and it made me angry. It was a lie of omission. The pitches would not have been made because the book and CD were necessary and made to work together.

An Excellent Reference and Great Patterns too!
I bought this book because of the patterns and I wasn't sure what to expect. After purchasing it, I read a review on [...], a sewing blog I follow. I am happy I purchased it....it covers everything from the impact of the original style to updates for modern wear. The patterns are sized from xs (size 32 to 36 bust depending on the garment to XL, 38 -42 bust -so the sizing for x-large is more like a size 10/12 in the stores). Every topic is covered in women's styles from the 1920s through the 1970s, except shoes. There are even chapters on lingerie and hats!
