R. R. Tolkein) turns his hand to popular entertainment: Virtues: 1. Fascinating "cross-species" love affair. 2. Fantasy setting, but firmly grounded in real world history and science (economics and the early middle ages); so the writer never can take the easy way out and just make "magic" solve problems. 3. Highly elliptical conversations between people who are being cagey—or just typically Japanese (keeping their feelings to themselves); so you have to read carefully and think about what you read to follow what's going on. 4. "Strong" woman character (literally!), as is de regieur these days. 5. Was made into an anime whose visual beauty and music totally sucks you in, so you want to buy the books too. Lawrence and Holo have become entangled in the biggest, ugliest crisis to face them yet. Separated for a good chunk of this book, Lawrence faces some harsh facts as he confronts the unhappy fact that merchants can't solve the worlds problems. Holo also has realized her limits as the ancient world continues to give way to a more populous one.
