Success!
Great tool. We have 2 dogs, sizes 55 and 65lbs. 55lb girl is muscley and fights against nail trims to the point that we were having to spend $20 at the vet reguarly to have hers trimmed. We had a guillotine style nail trimmer and you have to be fast and precise to get a trim done. She jerks at the last second making successful trims impossible. It still took 2 of us to trim her nails with this tool but the gradual nature of the tool make it impossible to knick or hurt your pet and you can make multiple swipes and passes, making progress each time, even with the animal pulling away at the last second. Our nailtrim fighter girl gradually calmed down as the nail grind session progressed. The noise freaked her out a bit especially at first. I think as time goes on and with regular use she will grow more comfortable with the situation. Overall A+ purchase for us. This tool came with batteries and replacement pads for under $10 which is cheaper than 1 single nail trim at the vet. You can get a lot closer to the quick and look at the nail as you go to see how close to the quick you are. Little chance of hurting your pup. Less sharp edges created on the nail compared to regular dog nail snips.

Works, even for my resident spook (after some training)
Decent product. It does take a decent while to trim the nails if they are pretty long to begin with, and if you have a larger breed with thicker nails. I would like to compare it to a dremel, but I havent gotten the chance. I like the plastic guard. I can see it being especially helpful if you have a long hair dog, as hair won't wrap around. The light is also really helpful to be able to see where the quick is while you are grinding. It is rather loud, which scares a lot of dogs, but here is my experience with this: I got this for my rather spooky greyhound. The first time I turned it on several feet away from him, he PANICKED. Ran into the crate, tried to hide. Getting anywhere near him led to crying. I thought I had just wasted my money and was rather dismayed at first. If you're in this situation, here's what to do: (I clicker train, but you don't need to for this) 1. At all meal times, I turned the grinder on and set it down just far away enough from his bowl, that he was aware of it, but would still come eat. By the 4th meal (dinner on day 2), it was standing directly next to his bowl and he was eating just fine. 2. A few times a day, for about 3 or so minutes, I would get treats, and take the grinder and turn it on for just long enough that he doesn't panic, then click-treat. As I was doing this, I would increase the length that the grinder was turned on and decrease the distance away from him, making sure to treat just before he panics. 3. Mine wasn't a fan of getting his paws handled in general, so a few times a day, I would get him sitting, and touch his paw, click, treat. He went from pulling back immediately and crying, to, by the end of the second session of this, laying there calmly and letting me hold and handle his front paws. Back paws took another 2 sessions or so. 4. When he is comfortable with having his paws handled and the noise, I would repeat the routine, just touching the bottom of the running grinder to his paw, and treating, so he gets used to the vibration. From here, just work up to actually touching the grinder to his nail, and increasing the length that he lets you do this. And finally, my life changing secret, peanut butter in a kong. Seriously. He went from me being able to just barely touch the nail to the grinder, to laying calmly while I grind his nails with just this addition. All in all, I got this product on Saturday. By the following Wednesday, with maybe 20 minutes of work on this a day, he was letting me grind his nails. I never would have thought it was possible if you told me on Saturday, after seeing him crying and panicking.

LOVE IT! So much easier then using nail cutters/clippers
I have five dogs...yes five. rom a small Chihuahua to a Blue Chow Chow. I normally have no problems cutting my dogs nails, but the Chow Chow is a puppy and all her nails are dark brown and I worry about cutting her quick. I ended up taking her to PetSmart to have her nails trimmed and they used a device just like this. Am I happy I got the FURminator because now I can do all my dogs nails (with the exception of the Chihuahua) quickly and easy. Unlike using cutters and then having to file them down, the grinder leaves the nails smooth and not jagged. There is a hole on each side of the clear plastic guide that you insert the dogs nail into and that keeps it from popping out or sliding side to side. One hole is big for large breeds, while the other is small for medium sized dogs. The light is very helpful in seeing what your are doing. I don't use it on the Chihuahua because her nails are just too small. To get the dogs use to the grinder's buzzing, I left it running and left it on the floor for them to inspect. They all sniffed it and after a while they did not mind having it right next to them. After a few days of doing this I was able to grind their nails within minutes with no problems. It literally takes me about 2 seconds per nail once you get use to it. One of my dogs even falls asleep as I do them. Make sure to get replacement bands: Furminator Nail Grinder Replacement Bands, 6-Pack

Takes a few days to acclimate your pets to it! Batteries get hot!
This grinder works pretty well on my German Shepherd Dog. She's 55lbs and fairly small for the breed but her nails grow out really fast and long. It took about 2 days of playing around with this around her for her to get used to it. For people who buy this, you MUST get your dog used to the noise and the presence of this device before attempting to grind down their nails. This is new to them and they don't understand the vibrations and noises - it is not the product's fault if you don't properly introduce your dog to the device and just go after them with it. This means touching their paws with it while its off. Letting them sniff it. Turning it on in front of them. Touching them with it while it's on full tilt and eventually tapping their nails gently with it and rewarding them each time so there's a positive association with it. That said, this thing gets very hot during use, even when there's no load on the grinder. I don't know what kind of little motor they're using but it must have quite a draw because the batters (which I'm going to replace with eneloops to see if they perform better) that came with the product come out too hot to hold after using this for 10-15 minutes on high. This is a bit concerning to me and I've docked points accordingly for this poor performance. The grinder also bogs down fairly easily on my dog's large nails. This is probably for the best so that 1. you don't apply too much pressure at once and 2. so that if anything is caught inside the motor won't keep spinning. So far, I'm going to need to keep an eye on this battery situation but other than that it seems to work reasonably well to keep trying.

Without this product, I don't even know HOW we would be dealing with her nails...
This is my second one but I was happy to replace it. Had our first one for several years and until the end, it was quiet and effective. The motor eventually died, but that's the way of things. It's rather inexpensive for what it does so I certainly didn't mind. It's not like a I purchased a $200 hair trimmer or something along those lines. I worry about my dog's nail getting hot from the grinder so I've adopted a "tap, tap, tap" method where I only hold the grinder to the nail for a "1-2" count for each "tap". She doesn't seem to mind as much when I do this. Because this product is harder to find in stores near me, I needed one asap and purchased a different brand for slightly less cost. Took it home and tried it and it just did NOT have the speed. I'd have been there ALL day with my dog trying to get the effects of 3 minutes that the Furminator brand gives us. I myself have a dog who now won't stand for groomer clippings; even with me and one other girl holding her down, she thrashes around violently. It got to the point where an additional girl who would do the trimming said they wouldn't be able to do hers because she wouldn't sit still for more than 2 seconds. She also isn't a fan of this method but she'll at least sit with me for a few minutes WITH the condition that I constantly tell her the whole time how good she is and promise a cookie for when we're done. Fair enough for me! :) I try to do this every day and that's been helping; they sit longer the more they're used to it. Without this product, I don't even know HOW we would be dealing with her nails... there's really nowhere else for us to go option-wise. THANK YOU FURMINATOR!

Had to Repair it before I could use it.
I just got this and would love to give it a higher rating but the item arrived broken. I was able to repair and avoid sending it back so I thought I would share what I did to repair it before talking about the grinder. First of all this comes with 4 batteries so when they did not work I tried some of our own batteries and they did not work either. On closer inspection I noticed some plastic that holds the battery contacts was sticking up which was probably not allowing the battery to make contact with the metal. It was too tight in there to file down the plastic so I balled up some aluminum foil and dropped it into the area that seemed to be the issue. I added some to the top too for good measure and that did the trick. The item was now working and both speeds worked so I figured I would just contact Amazon for a discount since I had to fix it and keep the item rather than return it. Amazon offered me a $5 refund which I felt was fair since it took less than a half hour to fix. Also it was easier than sending it back and waiting for another. My dog was already interested in my new toy before I had it on so I figured when I got it working I would try it. She did not seem to mind it too much. I have a westie and I flipped her on her back between my legs so I could steady her. She was pretty good really. I only did her back claws on one paw and wanted to just let her go after that so she would not go away with it being a bad experience. I told her good girl and she went on her way. This really does a nice job. I had one of those pedi paws things in the past that did absolutely nothing and this was way better It has a plastic cover that you can use as a safety or take it off if you want to tilt it sideways to round off the nail. The plastic cover has a small hole for little nails like my dogs and a larger hole for bigger dog nails. Really just to the count of 3 is all you need if you do this regularly. I do not think I will try to use it without the safety because it could hurt if I got her paw pad by accident. This is way better than using a nail clippers and works fast. I was working on the lower speed too. I think if you had a bigger dog with thicker nails maybe the top speed would be necessary but try the lower speed first. If this had worked out of the package I would have given it 4 to 5 stars but they should test these things before they pack them up to sell so sorry it's only getting 1 star

Exceeded expectations, especially for the price!
I got this for my elderly rat terrier as the groomer gives her anxiety and I do her nails at home now. I was afraid I'd not be impressed with the device when I first took it out of the package, as it looks cheap and it took quite a bit of effort to remove and replace the battery compartment to install batteries. However, looks can be deceiving and it completely blew me away how well it worked. I think the light could be a bit brighter, but it does work, and the device is otherwise flawless. I've owned those as-seen-on-TV nail files before and I had to clip my dog's nails before I used it to smooth out the edges closer to the quick because they didn't remove much nail in a reasonable amount of time, but I used the furminator file without clipping first to see how it did, and I was able to do all my dog's nails in less than 20 minutes without previous clipping. That says a lot because they were about a month overdue as I've had chronic health issues recently. My dog did not seem to be in any discomfort, besides the fact that she hates her nails being done in general. It does warn you that the nail can become overheated, so I didn't spend more than 2 seconds per nail at a time and just went back to them and they didn't seem to overheat that way. The dreaded clacking is gone when she walks now and the process with this device was very simple. Definitely worth it for the price. The file isn't even used up yet, it came with an extra, and the replacement files are super cheap as well. Definitely recommend for dog home nail care.

Forget this, just get the Dremel!
I've used a Dremel for years for filing my dogs' nails. I have three - two whippets and a very large golden retriever. The Dremel wasn't put away properly and one of the dogs chewed it, so I decided to get this Furminator nail grinder on Prime Day. Despite the decent "deal", this product simply isn't worth it. It has two speeds, but only works on first speed. Second speed shuts it off. There is a light to help you see the nail, but as soon as you put pressure on the grinder the light turns off so it's completely useless. Also, if you put anything other than the very lightest pressure on the grinder, it will stop rotating. With a Dremel, it would take less than a minute to grid my whippets' nails, and the Furminator took about 2 minutes per nail. 2 minutes per nail, 4 nails per foot on four feet (they don't have dewclaws)... that's asking my dog to hold still and get her nails filed for over a half an hour. That does NOT work for me or my dog! Also, my golden's nails are so large and tough, the Furminator nail grinder didn't even really work on them at all. The one good thing about this grinder is that it has a nice thick plastic guard that covers the spinning grinder. This helps prevent long hair from getting caught in the grinder, which happened once with the Dremel. It's nice to know that this would be less of an issue with the Furminator, but it doesn't make up for the other downfalls. My recommendation to everyone is to not look for the bargain in this case. Splurge and get a cordless, rechargeable Dremel. It may cost considerably more, but this Furminator nail grinder doesn't work on large dogs and works very slowly on medium sized dogs, so the time and stress aren't worth it. Throw in the fact that the additional features don't work as advertised, and it's a no-brainer.

Much better than a Pedi Paw.
I was using a Pedi Paw but it was slow going because it was very weak and would bog down and stop if any pressure was applied. I considered getting a Dremel but I’m not impressed with the looks of the upgraded nail guide system and neither are many reviewers. So I got the Furminator and it works great. The guard is similar to what I was used to and it makes quick work of my 2 standard (large) poodles nails because the motor is quite strong. I only need to use it on the low speed. That’s good because the high speed is very noisy. I saw a few reviews that said it was weak but I use rechargeable batteries and it has lots of power and I can do both dogs in about 20 min with power to spare. There is a design flaw IMHO. The tab that locks the battery holder in place is at a seam where the two halves of the main unit come together. This puts pressure at bad spot and causes the seam to spread at that point which looks like it could break if not careful. I removed the battery holder, put a drop of Crazy glue on the seam at that point and after 30 min inserted the battery pack and it doesn’t spread the seam anymore. You get a extra grinding tube but no instructions on how to install it. Loosen the screw on the end of the drum, remove the old grinding tube, install the new one and tighten the screw to expand it to hold the tube firmly in place so it doesn’t slip on the drum. Originally the screw on mine was loose so the grinding drum was slipping and moving back and forth on the drum like other reviewers have reported. Don’t bother using the included batteries, they are zinc carbon and can’t supply enough current. Alkaline or NMHI rechargeables are a must. The light helps you to see what you’re doing. If your dog has transparent nails like one of mine you can check the location of the quick easily by shining the light from the opposite side the nail before grinding from the proper side. To keep the nails from heating up too much do a bit on each nail and repeat. Your dog will be much more comfortable. Trimming the nails every week or two makes it easy and quick work.

Great Way to Trim Dog Nails
This is so much better than the traditional nail clippers. It works really well and after a few tries my dog has gotten used to it.

Superb product
Highly recommend this product to dog owners. Clipping of nails is very difficult and chances of cutting the nerve is very high. Bit expensive but worth it.
