Review: Good movie, beautifully shot, loved the slow reveal of the monsters, very exciting and scary. - Very enjoyable movie, easily the best exploration of the concept I have ever seen cinematically of a monster that hunts by sound, where being quiet is the key to survival. When I first heard of the film, I thought at first it was a cinematic version of Tim Lebbon’s excellent _The Silence_, and then when hearing (sorry no pun intended) it wasn’t a filmed version but its own story, thought maybe it was too derivative. Happily, the movie and the book are truly unrelated. They share some similarities – both have a family where having a deaf girl daughter may have been a key in the family’s survival or at the very least the deaf girl plays a big role in the story, both deal with a world that is no longer our own because of the presence of monsters that hunt by sound, any sort of noise, and being quiet is how one stay’s alive – but there the similarities end. The story in _A Quiet Place_ is elegantly pared down to almost an essence, not that I didn’t enjoy _The Silence_, as in _A Quiet Place_ the apocalypse is already happened, past tense, and the movie pretty much focuses on the struggle of one family in a world where making any sound that is too loud can attract demonic monsters, where communication has to be done with facial expressions, sign language, and writing. Not that I didn’t enjoy watching the world end in Lebbon’s novel – it was well done – but here the spare, beautiful, touching and later scary portrayal of one family dealing with these creatures, all while contending with normal and not so normal family life, it was elegant, efficient, spare, and beautiful. The movie was beautifully filmed and didn’t forget to show the beauty of forest, fields, a farm, waterfall, flowers blooming, the changing seasons…all a great, quiet beauty that conceals absolutely terrible monsters. The creatures in _A Quiet Place_ were very well done and portrayed, and though I liked Lebbon’s creations, were a whole lot scarier. The action was excellent and also oddly empowering, as women and children did a lot to fight the creatures and fight them successfully. No one was really helpless unless very young, but this being a well-made horror movie, no one at all was guaranteed of success. I have seen a few quibbles here and there about some plot holes regarding how sound works, how far it can be transmitted, how the monsters might have been avoided or fought, but I didn’t see anything that took me out of the movie, that made me stop suspending disbelief, nor anything that made me angry. The movie has an interesting premise and makes intelligent people thoughtful and reflective on how such a situation would exist. Good movie, beautifully shot, loved the slow reveal of the monsters, very exciting and scary.
Review: Better than 4 stars - I have watched the movie, and I think its worth the money. I have also read reviews and anything under a 4 is by people who have never seen the movie Carnivore. I have said this in other reviews, compared to it, this move is great. Carnivore is the ONLY movie worth a 1 star. This movie is not that, im sure there are parts or pieces you may not like, every can have an opinion, but when you rate it against other movies, this one is not terrible. Its a different approach, so keep your mind open. Hope you enjoy it!
