The sound is made when position your lips at the mouth piece (small end) much like you would with a trumpet, blow with a steady force.

No, it will not. It will make them look in your direction, but they will not be scared away by this horn or any other instrument for that matter. The mouth on this Vuvuzela is much wider than the one I had as a little girl and is a bit more difficult to use. I do understand trying to scare the deer away. I hope this helps.
