History & Mythology From the invasion of Britain to the siege of Paris, the Viking age is indeed one of the most tumultuous and formative periods of European history. But what of the forces behind the seismic raids and explorations? What of the ingenious craftsmanship behind the longboats that were beyond their time? Often, a farrago of myths and facts continues to portray a rather foggy image of the Vikings; but could the Vikings truly be the savage seafarers that history condemns them to be? Inside you will read about... The History - The Raids and Settlements of the Vikings - Siege of Paris - The Viking Longship - The Viking Dress Code - The Social Landscape of the Vikings The Mythology - Gods and Goddesses - The Nine Worlds - Heroes and Legends - Mythological Creatures - Ten Little Known Facts about Norse Mythology And much more! This book provides a balanced and riveting account of the Viking age—from its dawn to dusk. Without white washing the savagery of the Vikings, it chronicles the many raids that were undertaken. It also presents another view point of these fascinating people. Employing the latest archeological finds and various sources, it paints a different yet factual picture of the Vikings. The book delves into the many cultural aspects of the society: religion—the Nordic gods—social structure, cloth, house and much besides. Their celebrated ship architecture is discussed at length, myths are debunked, legends are deliberated—many facets of this epoch are dilated in detail. Review: Three Stars - Repetitive information Review: I did not get much out of it. - Not an easy read. Too much information in a small book. Not a "story", but more a record of events.

Pretty good
Quite a few typos that irritated me, but the overall content was good. I was personally far more interested in the mythology and their stories than some of the information included in the history section (the detailed break down of their types of boats was a bit of a yawn-fest for me). If you want a quick overview of the Viking age, I'd recommend this book. However, if you are more interested in their stories and culture, I'd perhaps look elsewhere first.

Sorry I don't like to be negative
Is this a book? Badly constructed use of some very pretentious nouns and adjectives - presumably it is self-published, nothing in this book that couldn't be got from Wikipedia. Sorry I don't like to be negative.

Good book, well written
I prefer actual history as opposed to "Hollywood history". While it is entertaining, Hollywood history tends to lean towards sensationalising certain aspects of history. This book shows the "Viking" people as they were. Also, their never actually referred to themselves as Vikings. The term Viking was an activity, not a group of people. Good book, well written.

Informativ
Wenn man über die Lebensweise bzw. über die Mythologie der Wickinger mehr erfahren, ist dieses Buch genau der richtige Einstieg

An informative read
I thought this book was quite informative on a period of history I love. The only minus point would have to be it's length. It's far too short! However, for a beginner, it provides the reader with the basics. It's then up to them to pursue it further I guess.

At first I found myself a little bit disappointed upon opening the packaging and pulling out a very thin looking book, for £13 odd I thought it would be at least the same size as Daniel McCoy's The Viking Spirit. However, despite flying through the book in less than 5 hours I found it to be a really concise and engaging read, very much to the point and really quite informative, it was much easier to read than some of the other Viking books I've bought recently and I would say in my own opinion for what it's worth is that this is probably the best introduction to the Viking world i have read. I would give this 5 stars but I think given the price there could have been a little more included, even a few pictures or timeline examples etc or if the book were to be no more than £10 as it is.
