Same cooking time as brown rice. *by D***. on Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2017* Wash this rice! I don't usually see a need to rinse, much less wash rice prior to cooking. This rice has apparently gone straight from the field into these bags. It is not only dusty but has bits of leaves. A good soak and several rinses removes the dirt and it's flavor. Once thoroughly washed, the rice cooks up nicely in 40-45 minutes (I live at high altitude). The package says it cooks in less time than brown rice. That was not my experience. I find it to be more delicious than brown rice and easier to digest. Simply soak the rice in clear water one day, then rinse and cook as usual. Changes the glycemic load index for diabetics. Makes a healthier meal for all of us. More aminos for protein, less carbohydrate load.The only problem I had with those instructions was finding a rice that still looked and tasted like rice. Most of them turn to mush.This one does not. The grains stay nutty textured and firm. If you like a bit of color in your meal (I'm obsessed with interesting colors in foods), this is a fun substitution for brown rice. It doesn't really taste any different and the texture is similar (though the individual cooked grains are a little bit more distinct than brown rice, I suppose). But as rice goes, I'm happy with it.You can see the full nutrition information in one of the product panels. The chief benefit of this product is the fiber, but there's also a little iron (maybe that contributes to the color)? As the package says, this *does* cook faster than brown rice, though not by a lot if you follow the instructions precisely. I started this first and it still was the last thing finished. (I also sauteed some green bell peppers and onion and steamed some broccoli and tossed that all together with some fake "beef" and simmered for a bit.) But it was somewhat faster than brown rice.This is also a pretty good bargain. Red rice at Whole Foods usually has a greater unit price (even accounting for shipping).
