Success from the Start: Your First Years Teaching Secondary Mathematics

Not just for New Teachers! A must read for any math teacher that wants to improve their skill.
I don't have a good way to describe this book except to say that it is complete where other books left gaps. It is specific where other books were general. It is detailed where others were frustratingly obscure. In a nutshell, this book teaches how to teach math based on the latest research on the subject. Practicing the principals presented here should lead to rigorous learning in students; not just learning that leads to high state test scores, but learning that students can apply to situations beyond the scope of what was presented in the classroom.Everything is included. How to facilitate discussions, how to manage the classroom, decorate the walls, what to say, and what not to say, how to turn incorrect answers into teachable moments that make ALL students feel good about learning. Every important topic is covered. The title suggests it is for new teachers, however, this is a powerful book which no math teacher should be without. I've been teaching math for four years. My students' scores are good, but I've always felt I could do more for them. This year I will. After reading this book, I plan to change EVERYTHING so it aligns with the suggestions presented here.

Came in good time and new condiiton
The book came brand new and in two days with Prime. Much better than paying the shipping from buying the book through a different website.

An essential guide that every teacher should read, not just secondary.
I was fortunate enough to have Dr. Wieman as a professor in my university. I've never had a teacher who made more of a difference in my life. He understands that an over-obsession about grades doesn't actually increase learning, and he teaches an incredibly progressive and forward thinking course, and this book encapsulates a lot of those courses. I will admit I only purchased the book (off the NCTM website, not Amazon) because I admire him so much, but everything I learned in the three courses I took with him taught me to appreciate why I love mathematics even if I always struggled in math class. And that is what this book is, a compilation of the lessons I learned from him. I am the teacher I am today because of him and the lessons in this book, and I am eternally grateful.

Grounded in practice, not mired in dull theory
A daring romp through one's first year of teaching higher-grades math, I found this book to be practical. It doesn't waste your time with endless rehashing of math-ed theory; rather, it goes straight to practice. This is what people need. I teach all-level (k-12) math and wish that I had had a book like this when I started my career in the 90's.I purchased this book from a conference sponsored by the N.C.T.M. (National Council of Teachers of Math), but wanted to ensure that potential buyers on Amazon would know the value that it offers. Most of us started our path in teaching with little-to-no guidance, unless you were lucky enough to have a mentor teacher down the hall who would look in on you and help you adjust to what can be a frustrating, sometimes tearful year.Wieman and Arbaugh have been there, and they know exactly what you are going thru. I would think that the concepts in the book could be useful even if you are a first-year teacher of, say, science, and maybe even any other subject. Even if you are well into your career as I am, you can always learn ways to hone and refine what you do, helping to make yourself an efficient and effective person who shapes the minds of students.
