Yes it will work for green-winged teal. The call is capable of doing six waterfowl if you want more information you could probably search "Six in one pintail widgeon" on YouTube or Google.

I'm buying a duck call for a christmas present. I don't know anything about these. Would it make more sense to buy a mallard drake duck call or a hen?

My opinion would be to buy the hen call. The drake call shown is more of a specialty call.
