How many players typically plays Mah Jongg?

Usually there are 4 players. However, one friend and I kind of tweaked the rules for when we want to play, but don't have 4 ... we simply play with just the two of us. We rarely keep score, just who won.

Has anyone tried using permanent marker on this mahjong tiles? Does it blot?

It just rubs off after a pretty short time (all the shuffling is probably the main reason). They're pretty hard & impermeable. I presume that you are considering putting Arabic numerals on the Character tiles and perhaps marking the Wind tiles as well? I had tried a sharpie on one, to see how it worked - the mark was essentially gone in a few days of fairly steady playing. I had considered taking my Dremel tool with a very fine diamond bit to lightly engrave the marks I wanted to add, then going over that with a ultra-fine tip sharpie, but I haven't tried it yet. I figured that breaking the surface would allow the ink to adhere better, plus it would put the mark below the surface so it wouldn't get rubbed off. In the mean time, I just printed up 4 "cheat sheets" that have the Cracks, Winds, Dragons, Flowers and Seasons with the appropriate label in English. These were pretty easy for us to use and we picked up the meanings pretty easy after a few games.

We play with 2, 3, or 4 players. We probably aren’t playing by the “official” rules. I’d guess you say we have “family rules” but we’ve been playing this way for 35+ years. My teenagers and young adult son have started playing. It’s cool to have three generations of family members enjoy playing a game together.
