Good introduction
This is a very easy to read and easy to understand textbook with great figures if you already have a solid understanding of biology. It is particularly useful when paired with Nolte's visual guide. This is ideally suited to entry level graduate textbook. This is not the encyclopedia of all things neurobiology; it is exactly what the title describes-an introduction. Overall, it is a great textbook.

Great figures; complete information; but too complete perhaps for a med student?
I went to the U of AZ almost 50 years ago and was taught neuroanatomy by the great and late Dr Jay Angevine. He brought original material from Harvard, taught with passion and ensured the 64 students in our class all understood the difference between an afferent pathway to the thalamus prior to its arrival in the cerebral cortex from an efferent pathway from said cortex on the other side of the Central Sulcus that bypassed said thalamus and danced across the CNS somewhere to end up on the other side of the spinal cord. Cool stuff! No wonder stroke victims had clinical findings on the opposite side of the body from the location of the lesion in the brain. OK, forget this long- winded intro-; never met the late Dr Nolte, met the current author at my 40 year reunion ( he was professor)—nice fellow. Have read some material in this edition, but have not attempted focused study. Prior editions have contained way too much detail for me to retain when I wanted to brush up on a Neuroanatomical topic, so I bought the “essentials” version, which was too light on details. However, the figures, images, tables and scholarship are top notch in this book and belong in the library of anyone interested in the topic. I expect the book is good backup to lecture notes in the classroom.

Not an easy read
This is the main book for my neurobiology class. It is not easy to read. It’s so convoluted with details that it can be difficult to grasp basic concepts. My other neuro book is very user friendly and easy to understand.

eBook currently inaccessible
I specifically spent more money to purchase a new textbook so that I could get the codes for the eBook so that I wouldn't have to carry very heavy textbooks back and forth to class this summer. Joke's on me because they are currently migrating their eBooks to a new system and I won't have access to those codes for 4-6 weeks. A huge waste of money since my class ends in 4 weeks.

Great book on basics on functional brain anatomy. Some previous knowledge is highly advised.
I've bought a kindle version of the book. Pictures in this version are lacking colouring and quality but I was expecting that, I opted for this version because I find it easier to read in this format. As a neurologist I find the text very easy to underdtand. The informatipn is acurate and up to date. Basic knowledge of brain anatomy is advised before reading, otherwise it might be a bit difficult to follow. Some aspects od brain function are given more attention than others. The best thing about this book is the style in which it is written and I would gladely recommend it to anyone who is interested in learning the basics of functional brain anatomy. It has a generalistic approach and tries to tightly organise different aspects of the brain functions into one cohesive story. To summarize it is not the most detailed book on the brain funcions, but that is not the gole here. If you are new to this suject and have some basic knowledge of the brain structures I think you will find this book very informative and very fun to read. It is also great for experts in the field who need a quick reminder of certain structures and functions. Great read.
