Great Collection, Awful Packaging
Oh boy. So we have a PS3 case, and a cardboard box with another cardboard box inside. What a mess. This is a terrible sendoff for the original series in terms of build quality. I guess I can appreciate the idea that Yakuza 5 for PS3 never came out physically in the US so they gave us a case for it, but really; why did you then give me zero cases for the actual games I bought. The box was made large enough to fit two cases into, then instead of giving us a PS3 case and a cardboard box that has two disks in it; they could have gave us a Yakuza 3 & 4 case, and then a Yakuza 5 case with a reversible cover [PS3/PS4]. Then the games would have each had a case, since Y3&4 is one disk and Y5 is another. We still would have had the PS3 variant cover, and since this game is not for PS3 that case wont be sitting with the others. It's empty. It will always just be an empty case; they could have at least made that the double case. Instead, the cardboard box is the double case, and holds both disks in it. Great. Cardboard inside of cardboard is always known to hold up over time. Ask the NES, SNES, Gameboy, GBA, and N64; those cases all held up great. It was a terrible move to go this route. Especially with Kiwamii 1 and 2 both getting Steelbook releases. It didn't need to be a Steelbook, but cardboard? For 3 games, one of which they were supposedly honoring? Just give normal plastic cases and a decorative box. That's the other problem. The outer box is also cheaply made, so it feels more like a sleeve than a box. It's just all so disappointing. However. The games themselves are great! I can't believe how nice they look, I was worried it was just basic up-scaling from PS3, but they did marvels with the post-processing to really get a nice look. There's not much to say about the gameplay; these are the 3rd thru 5th games so if you don't know how Yakuza plays this is not the place to start. It's like a hybrid 3D beat-em-up mixed with some action RPG elements; really story and character driven narratives. Each one is its own, but the characters are the same throughout, for the most part. I would recommend starting with Kiwamii if you are new as that's the remake of the first one. In the end, the games are why I bought the pack; and what a value that is. Boy does it feel nice to finally have all of Yakuza across one console. Zero, Kiwamii, Kiwamii 2, 3 & 4, 5, and 6; pretty nice set Sega provided us this time and I recommend you grab them all. I do wish they'd do all the weird side stories, but those might actually be too Japanese for mainstream audiences, so I wont hold my breath. In the meantime this is a very large collection of titles [this one is 3, 4, and 5] and is definitely worth checking out; just don't start with these 3 or you'll miss so much history from the series and characters.

Yakuza series finally all on one system - BUT...
Physical release of the three PS3 era Yakuza games, almost entirely uncut (they cut the transvestite substory from #3). Overall, they are fantastic, I love them. I do think the localization was a little to liberal in #4, however; there were too many "modern" jokes and meme references.... and they really made Saejima seem stupid rather than just out of touch. 3&4 are in the same disk and are very quick to install. 5 is in its own disk and can be put in the bonus Y5 ps3 case if you like. Unfortunately I am disappointed in the packaging. After the phenomenal releases of Kiwami 1&2 and the gorgeous steelbooks, I was expecting something special for this "red collector case". From the advertisement it looked like it could have been either a pleather or rubberized finish (like the Yakuza 6 Essence of Art edition). Unfortunately, it is just cardboard with a standard glossy finish. It looks okay on the shelf but does leave a lot to be desired. It would have been a far better idea to pass on the bonus ps3 case for Yakuza 5 and instead put the money into a multi disk steel book. Alas! Massive missed opportunity.
