Gerber Freescape Camp Saw Folding Hand Saw for Backpacking Hiking Camping Pruning and Bushcraft, 12" Blade

I have used survival saws, hatchets, sven saws, and silky saws on my many camping and hiking adventures. This is hands down the best compromise choice for a saw I have ever used. Ive used it twice now and it has not failed to impress me yet. The people around you will be impressed as you unfold this into a close to full size saw. They will be further impressed as you demolish wood with this transformer. The bite is fantastic. On a recent trip to get a wild christmas tree, the cutting it down was the easiest part. The 8 inch diameter tree took about 7 minutes to saw through and probably would have taken even less if it wasn't a tricky angle to get to. It takes standard blades, though the one it comes with works great on 10 or so logs I've cut. I did find that the using the belly works a bit better than the tip, as the forward two inches or so seemed more prone to getting stuck. It could have been the wood as it just happened twice cutting the same (live) tree in two spots. Still I'd stick with the belly for better performance. I have a little worry just about the longevity of it all, as the lighter pieces and folding design make more failure points, but the quality is good and gerber has always put out solid if not cutting edge designs, so I'm pretty confident this will hold up. If you buy this, unpackage it and put it in a lucky someones stock I guarantee it will be their favorite present this holiday season once they see it transform. You should go ahead and stock some logs near by because they will want to use it. This is a great piece of kit that will earn a place in my pack if I now wood processing will be on the agenda.

Great tool for handling sizable chunks outside or at home. When assembled, the blade is pulled tightly so it's less likely to snap. Can use normal 12" saw blades, which is available at very cheap price, and more compact than similar products in 21". Not sure if it's made of aluminum or steel but feels very solid and quite heavy. Can also store a couple of replacement blades in handle although they need to be taken out when the saw is assembled. The slot on the screw head is a bit shallow which I imagine would make field switch of blades a bit difficult. Also the diameter of the screw and the hook is quite large which is good as to durability. On the other hand as a result, some of the standard 12-inch blades with smaller holes may not fit, but that's an easy fix by enlarging the holes using a drill. Only that you need to double check before you take these replacement blades out with you.

Wicked Kool saw. We do a lot of backpacking. I found this on line and ordered it for a trip coming up (next week). I haven't used it yet - but it is very solid once you lock the handle in place. The saw breaks down to a slim bar for packing. Stoked to try this out. 9/19/2016 update We went on a back pack trip as a group. Most of my friends are experienced outdoors men as we all live in Colorado. Everyone gave the saw a try. Worked great, very sturdy. I did see another gave the saw a bad review. If your trying to cut a cord of wood, you'll definitely want a larger saw. However, this one packs away nicely (it folds into a stick) in your pack hardly taking any room. We camped for 3 days and sawed lots of wood for our camp fire. We didn't attempt anything larger than 7 inches in diameter. Everyone that used it gave it complements

It's what I expected from Gerbers Quality! Very Well made & very light with a low profile both folded and assembled. Very Comfortable to use. Reasonably priced.

Great concept, good execution, included blade has too few teeth per inch, so stroke level of effort is quite high. Handle is comfortable, and is the better of the few folding bow saw options. Seems well constructed, but there are easier to use (non-bow saw) options. Will keep it for Scout use, but will probably buy a Gomboy for my use.

Lightweight and super easy to use. Was not sure this would work for my son with his troop activities but it is perfect sharpness and size for him to use. Compact able to fit in his backpack and the durability will be perfect for cutting up firewood for their camping.

Franchement, cette scie Gerber est un monstre de praticité ! Elle se plie et se déplie en un clin d’œil, elle est ultra légère, et pourtant elle coupe comme une bête. Que ce soit du bois sec ou un tronc plus costaud, elle passe à travers comme dans du beurre (ou presque 😄). Le manche est super confortable, la prise en main est sécurisante même avec des gants, et le design est juste trop stylé. Le petit détail que j’adore : elle se replie complètement avec la lame cachée à l’intérieur — zéro risque dans le sac à dos ! C’est simple, elle a rejoint mon kit de rando/bushcraft direct. Si tu cherches une scie efficace, légère et bien pensée, fonce les yeux fermés (mais pas quand tu scies hein, toujours pareil 😂).

The latch for the blade broke after the second use, so now it’s completely useless.
