It was something I found in my Nan's video collection among others like Calamity Jane and The King and I. Although I was told I watched the other two many times, I find that I can recall Seven Brides for Seven Brothers more vividly than anything else. Over the Christmas holidays my mother and I managed to catch this on Channel Five. We tuned in as Milly met the seven Pontipee brothers, and although we were disappointed in missing the beginning we still enjoyed the rest of the film, the barn raising and the kidnapping scenes in particular. We laughed so much during those that we disturbed my dad who had his headphones on. As soon as I got back to Uni I ordered the DVD off desertcart. It took three weeks to come from where I ordered it, and despite only having just seen it I was still impatient. With good reason, the film is simply amazing. I don't know how many other younger people watch films like this, but they should. They are much better than what's out now. In my opinion anyway. I don't know how many people will agree with me on that one. Seven Brides for Seven Brothers is funny, has amazing songs and choreographed dances. But what I found surprising in a film from the 1950s was the strong female lead. Milly (played by the talented Jane Powell) is the new wife of the eldest Pontipee brother, Adam. Despite having agreed to marry after only just meeting him, she soon shows she's no push over when she tips the dinner table over when the brothers act like animals over dinner. She even goes as far to make Adam and his brothers sleep in the barn when they really irritate her. The best thing about this film is the fact that the men think that they are in control when it is clear that the women are the ones in the driving seat.
