Mine had an odd smell out of the package but it went away after I left it hanging outside to air out for a day. I would highly recommend sizing up. I ordered the size appropriate for my height according to their listing and it was obviously a size too small. I believe even sizing up by 2 sizes wouldn't be a problem, and might be preferable if you want it to fit on you the way it does the model in the photo.
