Good Figure but Overpriced
Hagane Works Mazinkaiser was released in Japan in August 2020 at a price 15,909 yen or around $146 US. I don’t know if it was ever available at the price in the US, but I paid $178 from a figure specialty site and it’s currently $175 on Amazon. At 6.7 inches this is a very modest sized figure and is even shorter than most of my Soul of Chogokin figures. $170+ is a whole lot of money for such a small figure but for the most part it is very well put together. The moment I picked it up, I liked it. Mazinkaiser has a very nice weight and feels solid. As far as I can tell, the die-cast is all in the midsection, thighs and lower legs. I’m not 100% sure on the lower legs which might just be very solid plastic. The feet are definitely plastic. The die-cast helps to give the figure a low center of gravity so that it can stand easily without a brace. The joints are all plastic and although I used to put a high premium on metal joints, I’ve come to the conclusion that plastic may be better. Plastic joints are smoother and if you’re worried about durability, ask yourself how many times you plan on manipulating these joints. These are figures, not machine parts. Mazinkaiser has some beautifully clicky knee joints and the hips have tremendous range. His little robot undies move up and down to give the legs greater range so that he can sit on his throne. The one weird joint was the bicep rotation which was stiff and seemed redundant given that the figure includes elbow rotation.I’ve never been in love with the design of Mazinkaiser. Apparently Mazinkaiser was originally created in 1998 for the Super Robot Wars video game. This was followed by a 2001 OVA. I don’t believe any of the Mazinkaiser OVA’s have ever been officially released in the west, so I’ve never seen them. Mazinkaiser has a very busy design with lots of fins and pointy areas. It’s very much of the era in which is was created. It’s meant to be cool and radical, but I much prefer the classic design of Mazinger Z and Great Mazinger. All those spikes and fins also add to the risk of damage. As I played around with the figure, I discovered some real issues. I have around a half dozen or so Mazinger figures, all with pilders that dock in the figures head. This seems like the easiest thing in the world but Mazinkaisers pilder simply will not slide in properly. The other issue is that I couldn’t get the figure to sit properly on his throne. The problem is that his legs need to be apart when bent 90 degrees but then they hit the armrests. I guess the photographer maybe just cranked him into the position. I find these issues unacceptable for a small figure that costs this much. There are definitely things to like about Good Smile’s Mazinkaiser but it is really hard for me to get over that price tag when I compare it to the cheaper Soul of Chogokin Full Action and Dynamic Classic figures. Despite the price tag I really don’t think it’s better than the Bandai figures. Bandai has its own Mazinkaiser which is over an inch taller but the best price I see it for is over $200 (sold out) and it’s well over $300 on Amazon. The Hagane version is definitely more detailed but I don’t know if it’s superior. The current price seems high for what you get but I expect it to go even higher in which case I really couldn’t recommend the figure. If you can find it somewhere in the $150 range, I’d grab it up.

Love it
Made very solid, I checked youtube before I purchased this. You don't really need a stand to pose, the bottom half of the torso is heavy, so standing is not an issue.

HAGANE WORKS
