Missale Romanum 1962

Seeing this full sized altar missal listed at $250 at other sites made me suspicious of the relatively inexpensive $110 price tag here. Not to worry! This is the exact same missal our Traditional Latin mass community uses on the altar (an original missal). One review of this product described it a facsimile of the 1962 original...don't worry, it is not a cheap knockoff. This beautiful full size (and heavy) missal has a leather cover and quality paper, ribbons and tabs. Included is the incensing diagram, feast days, the ordinary of mass and the propers. A true altar missal.I cannot recommend this product enough.I am so happy with my purchase!!!

This is not a good quality book - it is printed on cheap paper, and is paperback. For over $100, I would expect FAR greater quality.

This is an excellent full-sized high-quality exact reproduction of the Missale Romanum of Pope John XXIII, containing the alterations current as of 25 July 1960 and issued in 1962. It is highly recommended for use with the restored Roman Catholic liturgy of the Missale Romanum of 1962. It is large because it is intended for altar use. It weighs almost six pounds. It is 100 percent Latin, as is proper for such a missal. It comes with 11 pre-placed leather place-tabs, plus a package of five that may be applied by the user as required. It also has six placekeeping ribbons (two red, two green, one white, one violet). It is alleged to have been manufactured in Germany, but I have found no printer's imprint for the original or the reproduction printing houses, though some pages indicate that the original was printed in Belgium. Some items of note: (1) The text does NOT include the addition to the Canon of the Mass of St. Joseph, which was added to the Mass in February, 1962. A self-adhesive sticker is supplied that may be used to add this change by replacing three existing lines of text with four modified lines, in exactly the same space (page 293). (2) A copy of the Decretum which promulgated the above change is provided. (3) The Table of Moveable Feasts (page xxxvii) lists data from 1962 to 2003 (no later years). (4) The text (page 161) does not reflect the alteration made to the Good Friday prayer for conversion of the Jews, made by Pope Benedict XVI in 2007. (5) There are no designs or inscriptions on the back leather cover. When the Missal is in place on the altar and set, as is customary, to open from the left, there will only be blank red leather exposed.

This Missal is a very quality reprint of a 1960 edition. The paper is beautiful and the ribbons are very high quality. Many will be taken aback by the lack of St. Joseph's name in the Canon. A sticker is provided, however, it does insert St. Joseph's name into the two proper places. I simply added the necessary text in with a little sticker label I made on my Dymo labeler. I would definitely recommend this, it is significantly cheaper than PCP's Benziger reprint.

This is a masterfully reproduced book, down to the smallest detail. Smyth-sewn binding, tabbed pages, illustrations, quality Finch vanilla paper, 2-color pages throughout, gold-gilded pages all round, ribbon markers in the liturgical colors, rich red leather hardcover.

As noted this does not really represent the Extraordinary Form Mass of 1962 (no restored prefaces; no St. Joseph in the Canon). Also, charging $590 for a reprint of a 1961+1/2 Missale Romanum is exorbitant. It's possible to buy this same book brand-new for 1/3 that price.

This is a grossly over-priced and deceptive product: This is NOT the Missale Romanum of 1962, but 1961. It may seem like liturgical nit picking in the extreme, but, in fact, this is simply NOT a 1962 Missal. The differences are minute, to be sure. If one reads ( and knows Latin) the "Ritus Servandus in celebratione missae" at the beginning one will find upon comparison to the critical edition text certain items that were eliminated in the 1962 Missal. It is entirely possible for a priest to use this Missal to say Mass, and there would be no irregularity of any kind in doing so. The practice of the changes that took place fast and furious long before any new Missal came out were done by simply omitting the previous instructions. If one were to inquire in Rome as to what was to be done differently in the saying of Mass from the '61 to the '62 Missal, noting that certain items in the Ritus Servandus were left out, the answer came back always: "do not do that anymore". The publishers of this Missal have made the change in the Canon that added St. Joseph, and to many, this is THE litmus test for a legit '62 Missal. Not so here. Get the new Benziger Brothers re-print: it is pricey but it is a much nicer and a more beautiful edition. AND you can be sure it is an authentic re print of the 1962 Missale Romanum.
