This is a beautiful Japanese mortar and pestle set. The quality is excellent, and a great deal. It is carefully shipped in a protective box wrapped in bubble wrap, then the contents inside are also carefully packaged. Would be a great gift, your recipient would be impressed. It's beautiful! The abrasive areas are easy to use and grind. The main reason I chose this over a fancy pants marble mortar and pestle set was that the bowl is dishwasher safe. Yay! Love the ease of use. I bought the ivory bowl with dots. It's really cute and I am happy with my purchase.

It’s very sturdy. I got the 7” size and it is perfect for 1-2 people. I grind sesame seeds, add some soy sauce and sugar in the suribachi. Then I add cooked spinach, cut up, and mix it so it gets all the sesame seeds. 😋

Took 4 months , but my fault for ordering a 2 week before Christmas. But finally came in. It's bigger then I thought. Looks really good hand made!

I was very surprised of the size. The ridges are perfectly sharp. Can be used for a bunch of different things to grate. This also would be such a cute and thoughtful gift for anyone who cooks

Absolutely beautiful and can not wait to use it! I saw Alice Waters’ Masterclass and she recommended this japonese mortar and pestle and it truly makes so much sense for ease when making pastes at home. It’s also beautiful to even leave on your countertop. Neutral and organic looking. I love it!

Bowl is perfect size for 1 cup of sesame seeds

I'm shocked folks are stating they've used this item to make salsas, etc. While the bowl itself is pretty and sturdy, the issue arises with the pestle (wood grinder) as it is clearly not meant to be used on wet ingredients. I used my pestle for the first time to grind garlic, cilantro and olive oil for a fish marinade and despite washing according to instructions, the pestle is stained green and won't dry due to touching oils/wet ingredients. It appears this set is designed more for grinding seeds than making wet things like dips, marinades, salsas, etc. that involve fresh herbs, vinegars or oils. Very disappointing that the pestle wood quality was so low (even arrived splintered on the bottom). The bowl is very pretty and sturdy though as mentioned, but for the price tag I would expect the whole set to work. I am saving the bowl and purchased another pestle instead on Amazon that reviewers have posted photos of using on wet ingredients, so hopefully it will hold up (seems to have more of a coating on this pestle and not just natural wood: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0042KZ9KK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1). Overall, I would not buy again for $59.
