Genetics Demystified 1st Edition, Kindle Edition

Think of this as being a very basic high-school book. It is not bad but it only covers the most fundamental stuff. So, it does an OK job (but not great) of covering the basic vocabulary in genetics: allele, codon, DNA, gene, wild-type, etc. but it has nothing on many topics that are needed to understand modern genetics or the bioinformatics for genetics. If you need to know about SNPs, microarrays and gene expression methods you will need to supplement it with other sources. If you are trying to refresh your memory on that genetics class you had 20 years ago (like me) it is a good place to start but it is only a start.I would give it 4 stars if the answer key at the back was 100% accurate but sadly it is not.

A reasonably good introduction to the subject for someone who has not done it, or is re-learning it after a long lay-off.Tends to be more biased towards the molecular level of genetics, which is probably due to the advances in this area in the 20 years since I did it.Does not tackle Classical or Population genetics in any depth.Nevertheless, a good book to get you re-interested in learning the subject of genetics again, and learning newer technologies.However, you will need to move onto bigger and better books very soon.

Pro's:-Does a good job of covering the main topics without too much agonizing detail-Easy to read-Not a bad price compared to your average genetics textbookCon's:-The tables (esp. table 2-1) were too small to read!-The quizzes are somewhat laughable, half the multiple choice questions are jokesIn summary:As someone who is trying to catch up to much more advanced topics this serves as a good review for the price. I quite like the demystified series esp.  Math Proofs Demystified  because they are good at gleaning the basic stuff from massive textbooks, making the material more digestible. It seems like the publisher didn't put a lot of effort into the Kindlization of the book given that the tables and figures are often scrunched up and break the flow of the text.

I love the way everything is laid out. Obviously it’s not the same quality of a full on textbook, but you can definitely read this and hold a conversation with an expert on the topic.

This book is extremley helpful in explaining the simpler concept of genetics. What most people think of in genetics, (DNA, Mendelian Punnett Sqaures) is all discussed in this book. I got the book very cheap and it came in wonderful, PERFECT condition. I have been checking this book frequently this semester and love having it. Very helpful for less coplicated topics that are expected we remember (even if we havent seen them for 3 years!)

Genetics, the science of plant and animal breeding,the study of the elements that determine the characteristics of a plant or animal and their differences has been given a rudimentary or fundamental attention by the book "Genetics Demystified". The book has covered a groundbreaking foundation in the subject for the benefit of students, lecturers, researchers, geneticists and even the casual readers of the subject. I quickly recommend it to anybody with a serious eye for genetics of any form.

Nice overview. Makes what is seemingly complicated easy to understand

Try understanding Chapters 5 and 6. If you're not a biologist or a biology student, but merely a layperson trying to obtain an elementary grasp on the subject this will prove impossible. If anything, Mr. Willett mystifies the subject and for this he should be thoroughly ashamed. Keep your money.

There is a lot more to this subject than is contained in this book.But it points to the way forward through a bibliography - although this (I imagine) has rapidly become out-of-date.
