Looks great. Just wondering though is 3-5 harvests value for money? Would it be cheaper to buy the same amount from a supermarket?

Yes, cheaper to buy from the supermarket - even the expensive ones!
"800g-1.2kg" yield -  "as much as £8/300 grams before in shops!" hmm - the kit costs 22 quid for 1.2kg max yield (if you are lucky!) - That's just over £18 per kg. Waitrose sell them for £15 per kg!!
These kits are over priced for people that don't mind paying over the odds for stuff they grow themselves. Just like growing your own carrots - they cost pennies in the shops but we pay over the odds to grow ourselves!!

What does the spawn look like? When delivered it looked like it was covered in mold ?

If your spawn was white and furry then this is good- that is Mycelium. Mouldy spawn would be green and/or have excess brown liquid pooling at the bottom of the bag.

What is the shelf life of the spawn? As thinking of buying for a Christmas present, thanks in advance

How long after opening it from incubation does it take for the mushrooms to start growing? It's already been a week since opening

So you've added the spawn and now cut the holes in the black bag? I discovered it needs to be warm enough. It was much colder this time last year and mine took about 4 weeks to start coming through.
