some images uploaded of the big dot seemingly have the tritium glowing in indoor light. mine is not nearly this bright. did i get a dud?

No, I don’t think so - all my tritium sights (XS Big Dot on my Shockwave and several others on various handguns) only “glow” in low light or the dark. In daylight I focus on the large white outline of the XS sight.

will this work on a 1300 defender?

Actually, yes. However, you must first replace the factory bead on your Winchester. A Brownell's #6 will work great. There will be excess material on the inside of the barrel, but this is easily ground off with a roto tool.

Does this work on the sight with bead on the pedestal

For proper fit & install, original bead has to removed & replaced w/new bead provided from XS Sight. If you have pedestal, has to be wide enough to accommodate width of XS Sight. Unfortunately, most pedestals are narrow & XS Sight has a wide base.

Not understanding pedestal or plain barrel option. i have a bead with a hex base. please explain?

Is your bead on a pedestal, like Remington 870s, or is the bead installed directly onto a plain, round barrel. If your shotgun is a Mossberg and has a small bead with a hex base drilled directly into the barrel, then you want the plain barrel. The XS kit comes with a replacement bead for this model since the steel sight will not fit over the hex base and Mossberg uses proprietary threading. If you have some other shotgun with a bead with a hex base, but it's on a plain barrel, you'll want to plain barrel model, but will also need to source a replacement bead with the threading the manufacturer used.
