An excellent guide to Mandarin grammar. It genuinely feels like it was written with the Western speaker in mind, focusing on and clearly explaining the subtle differences between Latin-based languages and Chinese. Text is in Simplified Chinese, with a side-by-side English translation, resulting in a submersive, if sometimes slow-moving experience. But then, learning Chinese is not an insignificant challenge.This is a comprehensive grammar and language guide, so it refers to parts of speech that the average speaker may not even be aware of without a bachelor's degree in English. However, the endless examples of how an idea is expressed in English vs how to express it in Chinese give the Western speaker a feeling of how Chinese works.Of course, when it comes to learning a foreign language, nothing beats simply speaking it. But I found this an invaluable aid for understanding why people says things the way they do, and I felt like it greatly expanded my ability to understand Mandarin

Very handy reference book.

Hard to use since the examples are all in characters. I'll try it again in a couple of years, and used it for a few months but I needed to take a Chinese class and get some more basics of grammar down first. It would be great for more advanced students, and I've only been studying for 3 1/2 years, mostly on my own with teachers but no formal class.

Really practical and useful for grammar learners, especieally for those with no preceding gramamr knowledge.The exercise is a lighpoint.

This book is a good reference book on Mandarin Chinese grammar. Very helpful indeed. Although the examples were very concise, it will give you an understanding of essentials of Mandarin grammar.

This book has been revised, and it's still a load of stinking garbage. Number one recommendation is 汉语口语习惯用语教程, which comes complete with MP3s at natural speed.

If you'd ask me, I'd say it's a wonderful book, as it has everything you'll need to get to know at some point, if you'd ever want to learn Mandarin properly. If you'd ask anyone else though, they might have said that as long as you do not posses the foundation in linguistics, or read at list 1k characters in Chinese (both would be preferable, though), do not bother. The book is a great addition to your learning process, it won't be of much use to anyone, who relies on pinyin, or needs to look up definitions anytime they come across language specific terms.

Would have been a good price but doesn't include pinyin so difficult for new(ish) foreign learners! Otherwise pristine and delivery was quick too.

A great grammar book for understanding Chinese. The work book makes it easier to learn.However, you'll have to have had some Chinese before you start using this.

For a foreign Chinese student, this book is very helpful in having all grammar listed and examples given.
