A little outdated, but still helpful and useful
Very condensed and informative. However, I think this is due for an update since the last publication of this was a while ago. Medical solutions have changed and our understanding of it all has changed.I think if you read this you will not be led to the wrong conclusions, but I wonder how it could be improved from an update.

Small pamphlet/booklet, not book
I should have paid more attention. This is a very small booklet/pamphlet, not a book, that didn't offer any more insight than I already had. If you've been making excuses this might help you snap out of it and help you take responsibility.

Needs Updating with latest research about neurological basis of disorder
This 1999 booklet severely needs updating with new research, and being found in the lobby of many reformed churches this bothers me. The pamphlet, which focuses primarily on childhood, claims ADD (now ADHD as of DSM-V) is a character or spiritual issue, and that there is no biological basis for the disorder. It also claims the the term ADD is simply a descriptor of a child with hyperactive impulsive behavior. The newer research shows that there is a biological component and severe ADHD (note severe and not just someone without discipline) is a neurological disorder that shows up on PET scans when comparing brains between those with and without. There are less connectors connecting brain white matter which directly affects baseline working memory and emotional control. Another issue is that those with severe ADHD have less dopamine receptors in the area of the brain that controls long-term rewards, hence an inclination towards actions that have instant rewards. My recommendation for the latest research is the book "Smart but Stuck" by Thomas BrownAll of that being said, the advice to study the wisdom literature of Proverbs and Ecclesiastes is one I was given many years ago as well.

Have you walked in my shoes?
I did not appreciate some of the statements made in this booklet. I do not believe that Mr Welch has any basis to substantiate his claim that ADD is not a physical problem. I believe he makes blanket statements that offend a family who is really struggling to make sense of ADD and how it effects their family. No amount of "spirituality" will help a child with asthma will it? Yet there are no blood tests or x-rays to diagnose this. Does Mr. Welch actually know for certain that there is no medical tests to diagnose this problem? I have read material to suggest that an MRI does diagnose.I thought this booklet to be stated in an offensive way. Does Mr. Welch have a child of his own that struggles and cries and tries his absolute hardest to remember and obey? I do! Until Mr. Welch can tell me that he walks in my shoes and knows for certain that ADD is just a spiritual problem, his words do nothing but offend.
