“The true Guardians of the Galaxy!”
“Guardians of the Galaxy – Then it’s us” collects issues #1-5 of Al Ewing’s turn at the title. In recent reviews of his work, I have described Mr Ewing as having discovered the secret ingredient of Stan and Jack’s, and Stan and Steve’s work, from the dawn of the Marvel Age, though it was taking him six issues to tell a story where they would have done it in one, or two at most. Now he’s got it down to two or three issues. This is old-fashioned Marvel Cosmic storytelling – where ‘character’ is more important than blowing up stuff; though blowing up stuff is important here too, but stuff gets blown up for character-driven reasons, not plot-driven reasons (you have to write harder to do it the former way). There are two stories here, though they are intertwined, but it is ‘character’ that drives the different groups of characters in the two stories to do what they do when they chose the path that leads them into the first or second story. No spoilers here, by the way. A note on the art – I didn’t even think about it until I came to write this review; so it must have been good in order to carry the story without me even noticing, which is what good comic-book art is supposed to do.
