It is wise to let them know you are near. If they step in front of you at the last minute, everyone will have a bad day. A loud blast is threatening and can put a hiker in an aggressive mood. This little bell makes a happy sound, that can be heard from a distance, and is indicative of an approaching bicycle, not a truck.
