If it gets a blue + on the paper there is blood. My review explains more about the test kit and is worth reading.

What percentage of this testing is accurate.? I saw another product that said 97% but was more complicated to use.

Package says it is accurate. Be sure to do the test strip in the toilet to make sure there is nothing in there to react with the test. Need a toilet that does not have cleaners such as 200O Flushes in it. This can cause a false reading. Otherwise, the test is easy to use.

I found a dark spot on the cross but it wasn't blue or green. Is that a positive? It was a small line which was darker than the rest of the cross

The instructions I received in my test kit say it is a positive result if ANY part of the cross turns blue/green. Call their 800 number to confirm (800-854-3002).
