Whedon DS2C vs ShowerMaxx #74
The shower heads in my house were showing their age with mineral build up getting increasingly difficult to remove. So I decided to bite the bullet and order new ones. I looked at the reviews on Amazon and saw that the Whedon DS2C and the ShowerMaxx #74 got outstanding reviews and ordered one of each to see which one I liked best. The Whedon is made out of brass and has a very solid feel. The ShowerMaxx is made out of plastic but, quite frankly, the plastic nature of the product did not affect its performance in my view. Both shower heads are outstanding but they have a different spray. The ShowerMaxx has a large head with numerous holes though which narrow jets of water come through. The water from the jets in the aggregate has a pleasant velocity to it and the spray feels strong. In addition, the ShowerMaxx has several modes including a massage mode which one gets to by easily moving a ring on the outside of the head. The massage mode is great if you like that sort of thing. In contrast, the Whedon has a single spray which is formed by forcing water though a small metal disc with holes in it. The Whedon comes with two such discs, one with larger holes than the other and they are easy to change out. Personally, I prefer the disc with the smaller holes but this is a matter of taste. The spray from the Whedon is more narrowly focused than the larger head of the ShowerMaxx and also has a strong, pleasant feel to it. I don't feel that the width of the spray in both heads was a huge positive or negative factor. That said, the spray from the Whedon was a little more focused and had a better feel to it. I prefer this feel and plan to order several more of the Whedons. The bottom line is that both shower heads are outstanding and its really a matter of personal taste which one you would prefer. If you like a high quality massage mode, go for the ShowerMaxx. If that doesn't matter, I prefer the feel of the spray from the Whedon--its strong but has a gentle quality to it. You can't go wrong with either in my view.

Surprising, almost massage-like spray while saving water
I went through three different selections in my search to replace my previous water-conserving showerhead when its shut-off button gaskets started to leak after several years of daily use. Two were from local big-box home improvement stores: the first one was like showering in a fine mist, the second had a reasonably strong spray but with a rather wide, cone-shaped spread. Good enough, but I decided to give this Whedon model a try...It's even better than my old shower head! It not only has the strong, narrower spray pattern that I wanted, but also provides slightly massage-like streams of water. The package states that it "creates a very pleasing and invigorating shower flow made up of thousands of perfectly sized droplets in the ideal conical spray pattern." I'm not sure how it works, but it definitely does! This Whedon shower head saves water and has a shut-off valve like my old one had, so you can reduce or almost totally turn off the water flow while you're lathering up. (Good not only here in drought-plagued southern California but for anyone who wants to save water and energy.) The ball joint has a wide range of movement, handy for when you're cleaning the shower and want to rinse off the walls or tub floor. It's all brass, feels solid and well constructed, and is made in the USA. My morning shower is now an even better way to start my day!

Made in USA
Thanks to the federal government overstepping its authority, you cannot buy a shower head that flows more than 2.5 gpm. So, when searching for a shower head, I look for two things:1. Made in USA (or at least not made in China).2. Can be modified. This shower head meets requirement (1). It is made in USA.There's no flow restrictor, so increasing the flow is not as simple as removing it. However, requirement (2) is possible. This comes with two discs that fit into the nozzle. One is for low pressure systems. The low pressure disc has slightly larger holes than the other disc. The low pressure disc will flow more, so use it even if you have high pressure. What I did to increase flow: drilled out the hole in the ball. The ball fits into the socket and allows the shower head to be aimed in different directions. It has a hole, no larger than 5/32". I drilled it out to 1/4".The low pressure disc has 12 holes, through which the water is sprayed. I don't know what size they are, but I found a drill bit that is just slightly bigger than the holes, and enlarged them. Now this thing sprays like a fire hose! It's like showering in Europe!

AMAZING! POWERFUL OUTPUT!
Solidly built. Heavy duty and made in the USA. This is not some cheapy plastic job masquerading as metal. If you're tired of your fancy schmancy shower head and want one that gets you clean, this is it. 2.5 GPM gives you powerful output if you have decent water pressure and great output if your water pressure is not so great. I installed this in an apartment I was renting years ago and took it with me (putting back the cheap, junky shower head that was there before) after I moved out. I reinstalled it in the house I bought and just bought a second one for my other shower. It will last for decades.

Acceptable performance for the price
This is an acceptable device for the $15 price tag. Installs easily and has a nice stream when using. My only complaint is that the "shut-off" doesn't completely stop the flow of water - a trickle continues. Not a big issue, but can be a bit of an annoyance.

Excellent product
This is a well designed and great value product. Most showerheads are in the $50 range and most junky, low flow heads are about $20. For $20 you get a disposable, plastic showerhead which has no particular innovation to create the flow. The Whedon head is made from brass/stainless, made in the USA and has a patented vortex action.. It creates a pretty good stream and works well on both low pressure systems (eg, well pump) and standard pressure systems (mains). It doesn't look very fancy but it feels and works as a quality piece would. Replaced 3 showerheads with this unit so far.
