Friday Night Lights (Full Screen Edition)

I watch too many movies and i'm getting bored quickly now. I Love this movie. I found it to be very engaging,exciting and family friendly.

Great flick. Still watch now and again.

Well worth the cost. Just as I expected. The will and resilience of the human spirit on display. Loved the story.

The fanaticism of Texas football is on display for viewers. I attended one of the high schools that were mentioned in this movie. I don't think that the intensity is as much now as it was then. For Texans it was about Conquest and defeating your adversaries. It was promoted that way... extremely intense.

"Gritty" is kind of a cliched term, but that is really the best term to describe this excellent drama about the hard-core world of Texas high school football. It appears to be a true story -- as most of these well-done sports films are -- but that is really beside the point, at least while one is enjoying the top-notch writing, superb acting by all concerned, and the solid direction from Peter Berg. Basic storyline is the Odessa-Permian High School football team is accustomed to winning...and winning big. But when the new head coach arrives, played by one of my favorite actors, Billy Bob Thornton, it becomes immediately apparent that the level of expectations of parents, boosters etc. are very, very high. This is, after all, the West Texas team that has won three state championships. What starts out as a rah-rah football story quickly elevates into high human drama, when (and this is not a spoiler) the star running back suffers a career-ending injury. This plot twist sets up the true tension in the story - given that the team and offense are built around this guy, do they have any chance at all of winning, let alone making it to State and winning there. And, more importantly, is failure even an option. What a great set up for the marvelously precise side-stories that are so well told. The running back who seems invincible is suddenly brought crashing down to Earth. The so-so quarterback with the clingy mother has to step and actually excel at his position. The coach has to avoid losing not only the season, but his job as well. Great, great stuff, and Derek Luke, Garret Hedlund and Lucas Black are all superb. As is Tim McGraw, who seems to appear in a lot of films side by side with Thornton, usually playing a drunk father (think, Sling Blade, here). but McGraw really can act. Enjoy...

Everybody knew a book was being written but we had no idea who he was or what he would write about our beloved Odessa Permian Panthers. How bad could it be anyway. Life was good. We had beaten OHS. District Champs. State Champs. It does take a village to raise the kids who become state champs. It's not like your normal high school game. No, the big games are televised and draw 20,000 +. The community was a huge part of making these young men who they were. Good, bad and ugly. Which is exactly what the movie brings to life. Read the book because it is a bit of our Odessa history including leading the nation in per capita murder cases in 1989. You had to be there to believe this story we thought. Welcome to a little part of our history.

I love this movie and it has to be one of the greatest football movies ever!

"Friday Night Lights" zeigt in beeindruckender Weise, wie sich das Leben in einer footballverrückten Kleinstadt abspielt. Der Film schafft es sehr gut, dem Zuschauer die Begeisterung und die Leidenschaft der Menschen für diesen Sport zu vermitteln. Aber auch an Dramatik mangelt es nicht, beispielsweise als sich Booby Miles, der Star des Teams, schwer am Knie verletzt und vergeblich versucht, seine Karriere fortzusetzen. Ebenso eine tragische Figur ist Billingsley, der von seinem Vater aufs Äußerste gedemütigt wird und sich immer wieder anhören muss, dass er nicht in der Lage wäre, einen Ball zu fangen. Eins hat mich an dem Film jedoch gewaltig genervt: Die dummen und hohlen "Sei perfekt" - Phrasen von Coach Gary Gaines (Billy Bob Thornton). Natürlich sollte man immer sein Bestes geben, aber perfekt ist NIEMAND und es wird auch NIEMALS irgendjemand in irgendetwas perfekt sein. Jedes Mal, wenn Coach Gaines seine dämlichen "Sei perfekt" - Phrasen rausgehauen hat, musste ich an einen schönen Satz von Dr. Eckart von Hirschhausen denken: "Perfektion ist der sicherste Weg ins Unglück!" Da hat der Mann verdammt recht. Wer perfekt sein will, wird ewig unzufrieden und damit auch unglücklich sein, weil Perfektion unerreichbar ist. JEDER hat nunmal seine Fehler und seine Macken. Fazit: Ich kann diesen Film jedem empfehlen, ganz besonders Sportbegeisterten, allerdings mit einem Hinweis: Vergesst nach dem Film ganz schnell zwei Worte von Coach Gaines: "Sei perfekt!" Ich habe einen besseren Vorschlag: "Sei einfach Du selbst, steh zu Dir, mit all Deinen Stärken und Schwächen!" Wer sich so verhält, wird von seinen Mitmenschen gemocht werden und Sympathie erfahren. Wer dagegen perfekt sein will, wirkt auf andere meistens arrogant und eingebildet.

高校アメリカンフットボールにおいて、過去に何度も州立チャンピオンを 成し遂げてきた、強豪高校の1シーズンを描いた映画です(実話だそうです)。 この手の映画にありがちな、高校生たちの明るい青春スポ根ストーリーかと 思っていましたが、映画が始まるや否や、どうしようもない不安感、焦燥感 に襲われます。いわゆる胸騒ぎに似た、なんとなーく暗い気分に陥ります。 それは、チャンピオンになることを義務付けられたコーチ、選手が受ける 有形･無形のプレッシャーを表しているのかもしれません。 チームには絶対的なエース選手、ブービーがいて、彼の特出した個人技で 圧倒的な差で勝利を続けていきます。 そう、ブービーが致命的な怪我を負うまでは･･･。 医者から「君の膝の状態ではもうプレイはできない。選手生命は終わりだ」 と告げられ、しかしチームメイトの前では不自然なほどに明るく振舞い、 ロッカールームを後にするブービー。 その後、叔父の待つ車へ乗り込んだ途端、抑えていた感情があふれ出した のでしょう、子供のように泣きじゃくります。 『俺にはフットボールしかないんだ。もうプロにもなれない。叔父さんに 家を買ってあげることもできない』 私自身も膝の靭帯損傷でフットボールを志半ばにして諦めた過去があり、 このシーンではブービーの気持ちが痛いほどわかり、泣けました。 その後、チームは控えの選手の活躍によってプレイオフを順当に勝ち続け、 いよいよ優勝をかけた決勝戦へと駒を進めます。この試合におけるシーン は、さながら本物の試合をTV観戦してるかのような臨場感があります。 試合終了まで残り数秒。ラストとなるプレイでクォーターバックが エンドゾーンめがけて走りぬき、ディフェンス陣は、そうはさせじと 猛烈なタックルを浴びせ・・・ 結果は、エンドゾーンまでわずか数インチのところでダウンとなり、 無常にも試合終了のホイッスルが鳴り響きます。 そう、わずか数インチの差で敗北してしまうのです。 呆然として座り込む選手。 こちらも観ていて呆然としてしまいます。 このストーリーからいけば、エース選手を欠いてしまうけれども、 それでも控えの選手で優勝！・・・というエンディングを想像して いただけに、良くも悪くも期待を裏切られます。 そしてこれがフィクションではなく、実際に起きたことであるが故に、 重い事実を受け止めるのが辛いのです。 映画冒頭で感じた『胸騒ぎ』はこれだったのか、、、と。 ハッピーエンドの映画ではありませんが、とてもよい映画だと思います。 フットボールファンではない方でも、それぞれの登場人物に感情移入して 観ることができると思います。 非常にオススメです。

One of my favourite sports movies. Originally bought it many years ago but lost when moved house so had to buy again. Paints a good picture of how high school football is seen in Texas and you do grow to care about the characters, especially as its based on a true story. I'd recommend this to anyone who likes sports movies, especially American football ones.

Highschool. Football. Tutto in un film fantastico. Non solo per gente che ama lo sport, ma per tutti quelli che sanno vedere un bel film. Una película fantástica. La mejor del género.
