Judy, young cats need the exact same nutritional profile food as adult cats, just more of it usually.  The current trend of specialty diets (indoor, outdoor, kitten, adult, hairball, active, overweight, etc...) is more a marketing ploy than science.  All healthy cats regardless of age or "lifestyle" require a high animal protein, low to no carbohydrate, high moisture content diet. Kittens and lactating queens require considerably more food per lb of body weight than adult non-breeding cats - otherwise their nutritional needs are identical.

The label says 100% grain free - the description says "Wholesome whole grains: hearty whole grains like brown rice, barley......" Which is it?

Just got out a magnifying glass and read the label - no grain of any type listed.  I'm not sure where it says whole grains as on my label it says grain free.

On the blue buffalo is it minced or sliced or pate?

It is more like a pate, but a very soft and moist one. I have a Savannah and Bengal and they need high protein. Like all cats they are carnivores, not omnivores like dogs and people. They need strictly meat not vegitables and grains. Our cats eat a lot of raw fresh meat but when I have to feed them store bought food this is the only one that is pure protein and moisture, no grains, no fillers and most important no corn or by-products and meal. We love Blue buffalo, its way better than Science diet or Taste of the Wild
