Is this an essential oil?

Yes, manuka oil is extracted from plant leaves by steam distillation, and therefore it is classified as an essential oil.

How are you supposed to get it out of the bottle. I cannot figure out that applicator.

Take the cover off and look at the top. There should be a small hole in the center of a plastic cap on the bottle top under the screw-off cap. Put your finger over the hole and turn the bottle upside down. A small amount (drop) should be dispensed onto your finger. Put that oil on the body part where you want it applied and rub it in. The small hole limits the amount dispensed each time, otherwise too large an amount could come out and you would waste the excess oil. If by chance none is dispensed, shake the bottle while keeping your finger over the hole. It's better to put multiple, small amounts on rather than have too much dispensed and waste the excess. As you know, the oil is expensive.

Is this for use in a diffuser?

It would have to be highly diluted, something like 0.2-0.3%. We recommend the hydrosols we carry instead.

is it worth adding this to liquid hand soap as an additive?

could be....but the benefits seem to be from prolonged exposure to the oil....so the brief contact while washing hands might not hold the same benefit....
