Fotodiox Lens Mount Adapter, M42 (42mm x1 Thread Screw) Lens to Micro 4/3 Olympus PEN and Panasonic Lumix Cameras

I purchased this adapter so I could mount an m42 screw mount lens to my micro 4/3 camera. One thing was critical: The adapter needed to have a flange that would depress the aperture pin, or else I would not be able to manually change the aperture with the lens mounted to the camera. This adapter worked flawlessly. The lens mounted properly so all the information was visible from above, the connection between the lens and the mount - and the mount and the body - was perfectly snug but not overly so. The flange depressed the aperture pin without issue. The adapter is made of metal and feels well constructed. Recommended.

This adapter works fairly well, though I only have one lens with which to assess it. I'm experiencing some soft-focus, some coma, and color-fringing. For me, stopping down the aperture alleviates these. Using this adapter, I've mated a 1964/65 Super Asahi 50mm 1.4 lens to a Panasonic GH4; the crop factor gives it a 100mm equivalent focal length for full frame. If I did not already own the lens, I would just grab the Olympus 45mm/1.8 which is sharp, light, and practical (at 90mm equiv.). Although, in the future I'd love to get a CZJ Sonnar 180/2.8! Pros: this adapter opens up a world of m42 glass; going manual on mirrorless cameras is EASY with features like live-previews of exposure, and focus-assists like peaking; it is built well and solid without adding an unreasonable amount of weight or bulk; because of the crop factor it doubles the effective focal length and uses the sharp center of the lens (especially useful on older lenses which struggle with corner sharpness); excellent for a video kit. Cons: While it has good build quality, I'm not a fan of that small screw on the MFT side (I have tilt the lens when initially mating it to the body in order to clear the head of that screw... might need to grab a micro philips-head and see if it tightens down; no electronics, no metering, etc. (nature of the beast); need a new body-side lens cap; as you go for wider angles, you'll have to get a native lens (like wider than standard), because there's no sense in cropping a superwide; it will exacerbate optical flaws (like comma or color-fringing) in old lenses. Other thoughts: I liquidated my Nikon kit earlier this year and I have jumped ship to mirrorless (mft). Admittedly, it wasn't too severe of a switch: a D3100 (which had served me well), the kit 18-55, an AF 70-210, and an AF-S 50 1.8 (an excellent lens, btw). I won't take up your time with my rationale for switching, but in retrospect it was a good decision. I purchased a Panasonic GH4 along with some batteries, a 64GB SDXC, an Olympus 25 1.8, and two adapters: (a) this m42-MFT, mounted to a Super Asahi 50mm (crops to 100mm on FF equivalent) 1.4 and (b) a Nikkor-MFT adapter, mounted to a Nikkor 105mm (now 210) f/2.5 with multi-coating. In other words, I've got fast primes for 50, 100, and 210. Now to save up for wide angle...

I bought this to adapt my Helios 44M-4 to my Olympus OMD E-M10. Everything fits up fine, and the adapter has the flange that activates the aperture pin. However, it does not allow infinity focus! The lens bottoms out on the flange at around 4 meters.

Unlike other reviewers, I have had no problems going to infinity focus on any of my three M42 lenses on my Panasonic GH2. There is no binding of the threads, and the inner rim successfully pushes in the aperture control buttons. The M42 threads are machined well with no burrs. Using with three 1970s M42 lenses: Soligor 135mm/f2.8, Mamiya/Sekor 28mm/f2.8, and Mamiya/Sekor 50mm/f2. A note on my experiences with infinity focus: I've used all three of my M42 lenses for astrophotography. I have no problem achieving infinity focus on any of my three lenses and can dial in stars to pinpoint accuracy.

This FotoDiox M42 to M4/3 adapter appeared to be a well built item. Unfortunately, the M42 insert was not secured in the M4/3 adapter and it came apart. The M42 portion of this item was only secured by a press fit, no set screws. I don't recommend this item as it is poorly designed.

This looked like a quality product but when I tried threading my camera T-ring on it, the threads were very rough and I was unable to tighten it all the way to the end of the threads. I tried another adapter and that one threaded on all the way on very smoothly. The threads feel like they are too coarsely cut. I will keep this as a spare but I do not recommend it.

This adapter does exactly what I want it to do. I did have a problem when using a heavier 200mm Takumar lens. Although I was being cautious at one point the weight of the lens caused the inner bracing ring to pop out. I simply re-inserted it and tightened the 3 small screws and it is working fine again. Now all those old Pentax screw-mounts I have are getting a new rebirth. I highly recommend the Fotodiox adapters. They're not expensive and they make quick delivery.

My copy (and this review) was for the Fotodiox M42 adaptor for micro 4/3 system (Panasonic G7). Excellent convertor that is really solidly built, metal underneath well finished black matte surfaces. Feels great attached to my best Russian and Japanese lenses - becomes one with them. Perfect functionality. Comes nicely boxed and offers insane value. For AUS$12 delivered, you cannot ask for more from a basic adapter.

In meinem Bestand befinden sich immer noch die alten M42 Schraubojektive aus der Ära der Spiegelreflexkameras mit Kleinbildfilm. Die Objektive waren teuer und sind immer noch optisch hochwertig. Der Kauf einer Lumix G6 Systemkamera mit MFT motovierte mich, nach einer Adapter-Lösung zu suchen. Allerdings wurde ich von Fotofreunden gewarnt, die keine guten Erfahrungen mit Adaptern gemacht hatten. Ich wurde positiv überrascht. Der Adapterring passte sowohl am Kamera-Gehäuse, als auch am alten Objektiv genau. Auf der MFT-Seite ist ein Punkt angebracht, der das saubere Einsetzen in das Gehäuse erleichtert. Auf der Objektivseite ist ein Aluminium-Gewinde, das sich weich mit dem Objektiv verschrauben ließ. Die mir prophezeiten „spanabhebenden Geräusche“ traten nicht auf. Radial angebrachte Schrauben (Uhrmacherwerkzeug erforderlich) würden ein gezieltes Verdrehen/Fixieren von MFT und M42 Gewinde gegeneinander ermöglichen, so dass die Objektivbedienung (Entfernung/Blende) nach dem Einschrauben an der richtigen Stelle ist. Das war aber bei dem gelieferten Adapter nicht notwendig. Der Objektivwechsel mit Einschrauben dauert länger als das Einsetzen des MFTs. Also werde ich den Gedanken aufgreifen, mir für die alten Objektive je einen Adapter zu holen und ihn gleich am alten Objektiv belassen. Wünschenswert wäre die Beigabe einer MFT-Verschlusskappe gewesen. Die kann man sich aber nachkaufen. Die Verwendung der alten Objektive am modernen Gehäuse ist noch einmal eine Herausforderung. Hier sollte man geduldig die Bedienungsanleitung(en), Fachbücher und das Internet konsultieren und ein wenig probieren. Blende und Entfernung sind manuell am Objektiv einzustellen, die Kamera sorgt dann u.a. für Empfindlichkeit und Belichtungszeit, wobei man sich relativ schnell daran gewöhnt. Als sehr hilfreich haben sich erwiesen: der Fernauslöser und die Verwendung eines robusten Stativs (im Freien und unterwegs eher das Einbein-Stativ). Praxis: Der Aufnahmechip der Lumix G6 verhält sich im Vergleich zum Kleinbildfilm so, dass bei den Brennweiten der Faktor 2 angesetzt werden kann (bei anderen Apparaten kann das möglicherweise anders sein). Mein altes 50 mm Normalobjektiv entspricht auf der Lumix G6 einem modernen 100 mm Objektiv mittlerer Brennweite. Angenehmer Nebeneffekt: Man nutzt bei den alten Objektiven die Randbereiche der Optik nicht, so dass mit weniger Verzerrungen zu rechnen ist. Die Entfernungsbestimmung und das Scharfstellen muss man ausprobieren. Bei Kunstlicht und elektronischem Verschluss gab es bei mir Interferenzen auf dem Bild, die nach Wechsel vom elektronischen auf den mechanischen Verschluss verschwunden waren. Die alten Objektive sind im Vergleich zu den neuen recht schwer. Die Kamera wird kopflastig. Der Adapter ist mechanisch in Ordnung. Preis und Leistung stimmen, kaufen!

Ben costruito, un pò pesante poichè è tutto di metallo, permette di utilizzare la regolazione del diaframma delle lenti M42 che si montano! Buonissimo l'uso con la mia G9 che grazie all'ottimo mirino elettronico permette una messa a fuoco precisa. Non vi sono contatti elettrici per cui l'obiettivo che si adatta con il Fotodiox deve essere regolato con tempi, diaframma e messa a fuoco manuali. Io mi diverto molto!

Je cherchais un adaptateur pour mon Olympus E-PL3 et d'anciens objectifs Takumar (50 et 100 mm) et j'avais déjà du en renvoyer (les adaptateurs n'avaient pas d'épaulement et ne pouvaient donc pas prendre en compte le détrompeur de l'objectif, ce qui empêchait tout réglage). Heureusement le Fotodiox fonctionne parfaitement ! Je n'ai pas besoin de forcer, et les mesures sont bien affichées en haut et non sur le côté. Rien à redire sur la qualité (qui semble moins "plastique" que celle des concurrents). Pour ne rien gâcher à mon plaisir : acheté sur Amazon français, la bague Fotodiox a été livrée des USA en moins d'une semaine (alors que le délai annoncé était d'un mois). Bref, après une trentaine de photos test, je suis pleinement satisfaite. PS : au bout de 6 mois d'utilisation, une déception cependant : distorsion du pas de vis par forte chaleur. On ne peut alors changer l'ouverture que sur une petite plage (à moins de tout dévisser).
