Great Sound, Quality Unit.
I am very impressed with this Yamaha Dock. Previously, our only iPod dock was on the Yamaha receiver in our living room entertainment system with surround speakers making the music sound incredible. I wanted a simple, easy to move dock that did not sacrifice sound quality for aesthetics (and vice versa) and no more than $100. I thought I was pipe-dreaming until I found this Yamaha PDX-30 Speaker Dock, which also charges your iPod when playing!Though I am not a die-hard music aficionado, I am like most people who love music and want to hear all parts of it in full clarity, as if you are in-studio or at a concert, all at a reasonable price. After using this unit for a number of weeks I am very happy with it and highly recommend it. Just yesterday I heard sounds in a song I have been listening to since childhood that I had never heard before, that is when I decided to write this review. The sound quality is fantastic, not too tinny, not too bass-heavy, no weird echo-like sound, just wonderful. This goes for music from John Denver to The Beastie Boys to techno-dance to Brandie Carlile with the Seattle Symphony and everything in between. Incredible.I purchased the grey color and am very pleased with it, the white trim seemed a bit bright at first, but I like it much more than I would have liked grey with black trim. The rectangular shape is clean and neat, fitting perfectly on an open bookshelf and lends itself well to moving around into other rooms as needed. There are no other bells and whistles, like a radio or clock, but I didn't want any thing other than a quality dock and leave it to Yamaha to do just that.Note: I am using this with a second generation iPod Touch and must remove the bottom part of my case when I dock it. If you see a red light it indicates a connection is not made, which worried at me first but I figured it out quickly.

Junk
I have an older Yamaha reciever that I love so I was expecting this product to be worth the money. It is not. The sound is muddy and unbalanced especially at low volume. Battery life in the remote is less than 1 week. Call, e-mail Yamaha to complain or ask for advice ..... good luck with that.

Disappointing Sound
I was pretty disappointed with the sound of this system. Unless your ear is level with the speakers themselves, there's virtually no treble and the mid-range is garbled. So, unless you're sitting at your desk and can aim the speakers at you, the sound is going to be sub-par. I was trying to do some work that required me to walk around the room a good bit and the sound was driving me nuts.

Its OK - at low volumes !
Good sound if you listen at low volumes. Craps out completely at higher/loud volumes. At low volumes Bass is good , Treble is acceptable. Not bad for the price. I wanted something economical with decent sound quality for my office (in case it decided to walk away:-) - so serves the purpose. I wasn't expecting it to compare against Bose or Harmon Kardon sounddocks (I have both) which its certainly not and so not disappointed. Have used it with an iPod, Nano, iPhone3G and now iPhone4. Works great with all.

What I wanted for the most part
I spent about 2 weeks in search of the right iPod speaker. I'm not an "audiophile" by any means but I wanted a rich sounding speaker dock with good bass for my bedroom and also to bring into the living room for background music when I had guests. I don't think it's too bassy, btw, as some reviewers have said - but maybe it's because I have a preference for a little more bass. The quick general fix is to set your iPod EQ to fit your mood accordingly.I also looked at the Kanto SYD 4 and 5 (80 watts!), Klipsch iGroove SXT (kind of wimpy looking although seemed to have decent sound at the Apple Store), Philips dc570 tower (maybe too bulky looking but 100 watts) & the clock radios DCM250, Polk iSonic (seemed nice and booming, but expensive & people think the LED screen is too bright at night), and JBL On Stage 400P (seemed to provide really solid and powerful sound but I find it kind of ugly), among others. This provided the best combination of sound, power (30 Ws) and sleekness. I am a minimalist and you can't beat this Yamaha speaker dock for how clean, sleek and compact it looks. For power in a self-contained iPod speaker, I'm convinced that the Kanto SYD 5 is the way to go and I was thinking of buying it. But I'm not 20 anymore (I'm 39) and I don't need to blow people (or myself) out of the water any longer. Plus the SYD 5 is pretty stinking huge and this Yamaha, is compact and sits on my bedroom nightstand beautifully. There are a couple of foibles. It doesn't have an aux line in. Why in the world they wouldn't just put that in is a headscratcher. But it wasn't a dealbreaker for me. It doesn't have radio, which is fine since I can just stream stations and use Pandora from my iPod Touch. But the most significant foible is that the remote only controls your own music library. If you are playing Pandora, the remote does not operate the controls for the next song or to switch categories. I forget but some iPod dock speakers allow you to use the iPod Touch/iPhone as its remote control so you can have full control of the streaming music, not just your music library. But all these foibles do not overcome how much I like this unit. And at $169 with saver shipping from Amazon.com to Hawaii (shipping is routinely an issue for us), this was a great deal. I may one day buy a SYD 5 for dual use with iPod and maybe my TV, but for now, I'm really glad I bought this and it was exactly what I thought I was getting.
