Does this provide a permanent gloss, or does it need to be applied regularly? How long do the results hold-up?

This is an abrasive for granite. If used with a hogs hair pad you will make the stone a higher gloss. It is NOT a surface coating like wax. Permanent is a long time, so let's say that it will change the stone to a glossy finish and the stone will stay that way unless the shine is abraded mechanically or altered chemically (like with CLR or HFL).

a horsehair pad is recommended, which I got and which adhered to my velcro buffing wheel well enough as-is to complete the task.

What is the grit size in this product, either in microns or ansi equivalent? is this more or less aggressive than rubbing compound?

I have no idea of micron size. But it is certainly less aggressive than automotive rubbing compound (red). Not sure how it compares to automotive polishing compound (white).

will the 8 ounce be enough to do 20 sq feet

We bought the 8 oz and had over half left over and our job was twice 20 sq feet, guess estimating.
