I have been getting these doggy lawns delivered for about 6 weeks, so I am ready to write a full review. My first lawn arrived on Valentine's Day, and it was one of the nicest V Day gifts ever. My most recent arrived March 28. I am in WI and I have 2 Italian (miniature) Greyhounds who simply can't be outside when it is freezing cold. They are tiny, skinny, and nearly hairless. Even though I live in the country and only need to open the door to let them out, if a 20-below-zero blast of frigid air rolls in, the little dogs run back away from the door, and who could blame them. Sure, I could shovel a path, and bundle them up in sweaters and booties 20 times a day (maybe an exaggeration but little dogs go potty a LOT! Tiny bladders I guess). But what a hassle! They also don't like to go out in the rain, or even if they are feeling lazy, and the bathroom rug can be very appealing to my little "angels". I have to offer them a suitable indoor alternative, or I pay the price. I have been getting regular shipments of underpads from a medical supply warehouse for years, (they are cheaper than the potty pads they sell for dogs), I've been changing those wet, dirty smelly pads 5-6 times per day, every day, year after year, and having a reeking garbage can, all winter long. I previously considered the artificial turf products but those seemed awful, sitting in a constant urine puddle, and how could I hose them down in the middle of winter?! Haul them into my shower? Ugh! Not happening! I decided to try the real grass. The most amazing thing is that both of my dogs took to it immediately-and if anyone know Iggys, they are notorious for potty issues. That is why they often end up in shelters (both of mine are rescues). I barely had the lid open the first time, and one dog bumped past me to hop on and drop a gift. The other was eager to do the same. I could not believe my eyes. One of them is afraid of her own shadow, anything new terrifies her, but she was the first to use it, she sure knew what to do on "grass" when she saw it! They were immediately praised like they had just scored winning touchdowns, to seal the deal. I continue to reinforce with praise and occasional treats whenever I see them use it, just to make sure they know how pleased I am. I think they love the grass, as it feels much more normal for them to go on grass, instead of on papers. To get praise and treats for doing what they want to do, well, these dogs must think they hit the jackpot. I bet if I had this product from day one, we would have had a lot fewer accidents. The first shipment came with a little bottle of "pheromones ", which is probably just urine. I didn't need to use it but if your pup seems unsure, you can use a few drops of that or even wipe a teeny bit of your dogs own waste on the grass. Their noses are so good, you should only need a tiny amount, like a pea size of poop, and/or a few drops of their urine, for them to get the idea. I put some potty papers next to the lawn initially just in case, but they definitely prefer the grass, from day one. Now, I just put pads under the trays to extend a few inches around the edges in case they stand too close to the edge, and hang over, but that's all, and I seldom need to change those. Tip: At first I tended to smash the poo into the grass when trying to pick it out with wads of paper towel. I now use a long tined serving fork to cleanly lift the poo off the grass for disposal, and this works great. (Don't worry, it is only for this purpose, I'm not using it to serve the roast to the family on Sunday!) this works much better than a scoop (like for litter boxes), as the fork passes thru the blades of grass. You can get right under the poo and lift it clean away. You could also get a cheap box of latex gloves so you could pick them up with your hands, if you'd rather do that. I've seen the reviews who make scornful comments about the price. Well, you can't buy regular sod in the winter months around here. Even if it was available, after seeing Doggy lawn, I would not want regular sod. Doggy lawn is grown hydroponically. So it does not have a thick mat of dirt, it is only about an inch thick, (not including the height of the grass), so it is much easier to carry, and doesn't leave dirt and mud in the house. Real sod would be a horrific mess. Plus doggy lawn has no bugs, and no weeds. If you have ever purchased regular sod, it has about 4" of dirt, plus bugs, worms, all kinds of yucky stuff. You would need to go buy it and haul it home in your car. Also, potty pads are so expensive, I don't think this costs any more than 2 weeks worth of those. They send shipping notices, and it arrives in excellent condition, well packaged, instructions, gloves, pheromones and if you need help just call them, email them or go on their facebook page. From what I can see they are very responsive and helpful. All in all, I think the price is reasonable. The grass arrives bright green, damp, and fresh, every time. In mid winter, after not seeing green grass for 5 months, I almost wanted to roll on it myself when I first opened the box and got a whiff of fresh lawn. (I restrained myself.) The dogs didn't roll on it either. Nor have they chewed or dug at it. I also have a Lab in the house. She always goes outside to do her business, and to the best of my knowledge she has never used the doggy lawn. She walks right past it all the time, but she doesn't pay any attention to it. Bugs: I have never seen a bug or a weed in my lawns until last week we had really nice weather so I had the window open right above my lawn, and next thing I knew I had some gnats. They obviously came in thru the screen, so that's not the lawns fault. I put a few drops of dishwashing soap in a spray bottle of water, spritzed the grass and the window screen, and that took care of the bugs with no danger to dogs or damage to lawn. I have the lawn in my laundry room and it is next to a sink with a spray hose-nozzle so if it seems to be getting too dry I give it a quick spray now and then, to help keep it green, but I really don't think you need to. I've never seen a dog refuse to potty on a dry lawn outside. They even send a pair of latex gloves in every box so you don't touch the dirty grass you are tossing. That is very much appreciated. I have been putting the used lawns out in the woods next to the driveway. I've been laying them out flat, and I hope they all take root and grow once spring arrives. I am looking forward to seeing what happens. Even if they just die, it still makes me very happy to be using something natural and 100% biodegradable. I shudder to think of how much landfill space I've used over the years with those plastic backed potty pads. There is absolutely zero odor! I just carried out two of them that were 2 weeks old, had them right under my nose, and not even a hint of odor. It is like a miracle! The enzymes in the grass apparently neutralize the smell. And they were not dripping wet, either. Some grass blades will fall out though, so I recommend putting the old lawn into the box or plastic from the new lawn before you carry it through your house. Speaking of rolls. When you order the first time, unless you order the plastic trays, it will come in a flat box like a pizza box. The idea is to leave it right in the box, just fold the lid back. It does not soak through. I purchased initially from Amazon, then immediately signed up for the subscription service once I saw how awesome it was. After I got in the subscription program and got the reusable plastic trays, it started coming in rolls, and I like this better as then the edges don't dry out and the grass pad does not wrinkle up during shipping. There is another brand also sold here which was featured on a popular TV show but you get more lawn for your money at Doggy Lawn, check the measurements, and doggy lawn also sells their reusable plastic trays for a very reasonable price. They are a perfect fit. The other place has expensive wood trays. Wood is porous and seems like a bad choice for this purpose. The plastic makes more sense. And much cheaper. With such a rave review I know I sound like I own the company but I promise I have no affiliation with the company whatsoever, I've never even talked to them on the phone. You can see I am a verified purchaser. Check my other reviews to see I am just a regular shopper, and dog lover. I'm just a huge fan of Doggy Lawn and my only regret is not buying it years ago.

When I adopted my puppy Toby, a Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier, in July, 2011, artificial grass was the only game in town. I started out with Potty Patch - As Seen on TV, Small, Color:Green and then upgraded to New! Ingrass Puppy Potty Bigger & Deeper Now! Free Spray Bottle of Puppy Attraction Aid Spray 22" X 32" Indoor Outdoor . In fact, I wrote a very positive review of the Ingrass product, viewable at the above link. I used artificial grass for close to a year, initially for training, and then for convenience. I installed a doggie door that leads to an outdoor deck. The issues of artificial grass are well-documented in reviews. For me, maintaining artificial grass was time-consuming and somewhat gross. I used potty pads between the artificial grass and the draining tray, almost obligatory. Otherwise you have the task of pouring urine from a large shallow rectangular into a container. Every other day, I donned rubber gloves, removed the grass, squeezed the urine out of the potty pad before disposing of it, rinsed off the artificial grass in the bathtub which then had to be disinfected, then laid down a new pad, the grass, and finally disposed of the rubber gloves. Particularly on hot days, fumes would waft from the artificial grass onto my porch or into my living room. For the dog, the experience is akin to using a "porta-potty" every time you have to go, and dogs have many more olfactory receptors than humans to take in the experience. As soon as I learned of the DoggieLawn product, I purchased a 24" x 24" piece of real grass on Amazon. It was delivered in an attractive Pizza-like Box and Toby immediately took to it. With real grass, there are no fumes and no upkeep other than watering it every so often. The urine dissipates organically. It just works. Depending on the time of year (I live in northern California), the grass starts to turn brown in sections after 5-10 days. This is to be expected. The good news is that the dog doesn't care. As far as Toby is concerned, it's like new. I upgraded to the 24"x 48" piece and went on a monthly subscription with DoggieLawn which lowers the cost. This option is only available on their website. The larger piece retards aging/death of the grass by dissipating the urine over a larger area. Concentrated urine kills the grass. If you are only potty training your dog for only a month or so, the advantages of using DoggieLawn over artificial grass are self-evident. DoggieLawn is cheaper as a one-time purchase and it's the real thing. It has no lingering noxious smell, requires no pads and no janitorial conscription. As a subscription, costs are certainly something to consider. Doggie Lawn charges and delivers me a piece of grass 13 times per year (52 weeks/4). For me, its well worth the investment. DoggieLawn delivers the grass to your door and if you have an questions or issues, they respond quickly. They have a very efficient operation. If you have a semi-ambulatory dog, because of age, back trouble or issues walking, are away from home for long periods of time or simply need to potty train a puppy, you can't go wrong with DoggieLawn. Update 8/9/2013 The monthly DoggieLawn delivery has now become a fixture of Toby's (my dog)life. It's delivered monthly, installs in a under minute (replace old grass by laying down a new 2x4 piece),water it and that's pretty much it. You can expect the grass to starting turning yellowish after about a week and after three weeks, the green is gone completely. Next year, I might switch to a 3 week interval. The grass is really a striking green when it first arrives. I have been using the worn out grass to fill large holes in the dog park here that have been created by burrowing dogs. It's a great way to patch them and many local dog parks have them.

I have been buying FreshPatch for our new puppy and decided to try the Doggie Lawn product -- which appeared to be basically the same, but a bigger size -- for our rapidly growing lab puppy. I figured he could use some additional area to relieve himself! I was very disappointed from the moment this product arrived. The box was sodden, the cardboard soaked through, damaged and falling apart at all the corners (see pictures). The attached pictures were taken from when the box was opened, before my pup had even used the grass patch. The grass was long, discolored and just generally awful looking. The length of the grass is a problem bc it will make solid waste very difficult to clean up neatly. I have been using the FreshPatch product for the last 4-5 weeks and have never had a box arrive in this condition; the quality of the grass and overall look of the grass is much, much superior. ALSO, the packaging of the Doggie Lawn product is inferior. It comes in a box that has a semi-attached lid; kind of closed over itself, with a hinged side. The FreshPatch product comes in a box with a top and a bottom that are both rectangular boxes and can be doubled-up as a base for the grass. I have even doubled them up and then taken the one closest to the grass away and just used the "outer" one to make the grass last longer. The FreshPatch box is a sturdier box, with a waxed interior that seems to keep it dryer during shipping. This grass arrived so wet that I had to put a weewee pad (which I loathe bc my lab tears them up like a paper shredder) UNDER it to try to keep the moisture off of my wood floors. The level of moisture also made the box incredibly heavy and the center was buckling when I lifted it. When I put this down on the ground, my pup (who is completely trained to go on the indoor grass for now (until he gets all his shots), stepped on it, didn't pee and stepped off of it...proceeding to leave wet doggie prints all over our NYC apartment. Net net, I regret ordering this and am hoping that this delivery is an anomaly for the company. I have reached out to them, especially since I had already ordered a 2nd one of these due to arrive in 6 days...I would return it in a flash and go back to FreshPatch. Same price - much better product - much better packaging. I will update this once the company responds...Hope it's soon! I plan to throw this one out.

I bought this because I recently moved in to an apartment and have an upcoming surgery that will prevent me from taking my girl potty. It is infact real Grass and it came before it was expected to, I bought the biggest size but its not quite big enough for my medium sized pitty, I will need to buy 2 maybe 3 next time and put them side by side. The grass was fresh how ever this was our first time trying it out so my girl was very confused she is 4 years old and very well potty trained, she did not want to use it either inside or outside on the balcony. It took almost a week for her to use it and I tried everything suggested, the only thing that worked was leaving it inside and making it her only option for a few days and lots of praise and high quality treats when she finally used it, once she was using it comfortably was when I moved it to the balcony and now she will go to the door and let me know she needs to use it. A couple accidents have happened here and there but its not a big deal, I dont scold for it as this is a learning curve for the both of us and I know she doesnt want to potty inside and shes doing her best, she still prefers to be leashed and walked vs using the grass but she knows what its there for now and will definitely use it. The size isn't very big so it does need to be sprayed with water often to keep it clean enough for her to want to use it but now its starting to die pretty quick and the smell of the grass isn't pleasant. I like that she can wake up and potty in the middle of the night with out having to be leashed and walked, its also helpful for when I work long hours typically shes kenneled and a friend would come take her potty, now I have to option to put a patch inside when I leave for work and not worry about her being locked in the kennel for 10+ hours holding it, she can freely go if im not home and not have to risk a bladder infection. The price isn't the best for the length of time its used for. I recieved this around october 6th, it is now the 18th and I already need to buy a new one, again this is because of the size, if it were double the size for the same price it would be worth the money to have it all the time. Given the size and price and how fast it needs to be replaced this will solely be bought for time its needed such as my surgery and my summer work schedule.

This and other products I've purchased lately (see my reviews) have been a real lifesaver for me and a new puppy. I just moved to a 2nd floor condo and have a 12 week old Basset hound pup I'm trying to housetrain, but I live alone and cannot always be home. It was an absolute nightmare climbing up and down the stairs at 2 and 3AM to let the dog out, and it used to bark a lot all night, have accidents all day... it was exhausting. I needed a better system for sure, especially once I went back to work. What I ended up doing was installing a balcony pet door (Ideal Pet Products) and ordering these hydroponic grass products (Well, originally, I had him fenced in in the kitchen with a box, and he would still miss the box sometimes; now, he is very clear that the balcony is the place to go because there is a distinct boundary). It took him a while to fully "get it", and to this day, he still prefers to do his business out front on leash, but I do not worry about him when I go out or when I'm away at work anymore. I watch him on my iPhone (Cloud baby monitor app), and he is doing what he's supposed to be now. I have a setup where his bedding area is enclosed by a Regalo playyard fence/baby gate in an arc shape around the pet door, and he can have 24 hr access to his grass, too, whenever he needs to go. I have now tried both Fresh Patch and DoggieLawn, and can compare them side by side. In the photos, FreshPatch is the slightly smaller box in the front, and DoggieLawn is in the back (keep in mind, I stagger when I order them, so that FreshPatch is a week older). (EDIT: Not sure if Prime is available anymore on either, so taking this out of the review). The DoggieLawn wasn't bad on shipping either, considering it is a live product, but it is not for those who need something right away... took just over a week (earlier than its estimate). The quality of both appears to be comparable; the grass I got with DL appears to be a different variety (slightly coarser, still robust; the dog seems to have no preference aside from whatever is fresher), but both seem to last about the same amt of time (roughly 2 weeks, depending on use). I highly recommend that you spritz your pieces down with water at least once a day, to keep them live longer. The hydroponic mats they grow the grass on appear identical; both are clean and soil-free, similar to that Cocotek mat type of substrate. The main difference is that the DL is *slightly* larger, dimension-wise; they claim 33% (see description). For those who complain that the price is so much higher than lawn sod you can buy at a landscaping store or Home Depot, well, this is NOT sod. It is bug-free, soil-free, cleaner and (EDIT: Now that I've had the experience, the hydroponics do NOT last longer than garden sod, so long as the dirt is packed tightly and the sod is watered daily). I made a summary chart, attaching as a picture. EDIT: Now that I've had more experience with many options, I've updated the chart and will write mroe on my experiences. As stated above, I was incorrect to presume that garden sod lasted less time than hydroponic grasses (something I had heard from others). From my experience, if the sod is fresh and packed in tight soil and watered immediately (and daily afterwards), it can outlast the hydroponics. Obviously, the fresher the sod, the better, so a lawn & garden store might be best; for me, Home Depot is still the most convenient, and their sod is fresher than Lowes in our area (the dirt on the Lowes grass was ridiculously dry and loose, plus, the sod is more expensive by almost double). I have gotten this sod to last almost a month on my balcony, when watered frequently (but not drowned in a tray). That is good, because replacing a whole strip of lawn sod on the 2nd floor is a huge, dirty chore--I have to carry it from the car, up stairs, then through a carpeted living room to the balcony, and it is quite heavy. It's all worth it to have the do use it for this long and not have to take him downstairs constantly to do his business, but it's still not something to look forward to. If you are not able to lift this stuff or don't want to deal with the dirtiness, I still highly recommend hydroponic grass--DL or FP. However, I have to take one star away because neither offer Prime, and with the convenience of fresh sod in the summer, I have to go with HD or Lowes (plus, the realization that hydroponics can't outlast sod; I think this is mostly due to the fact that sod soil retains moisture better and just is larger, so it spreads out the urine better). In the winter, I will likely go back to hydroponic delivery or artificial turf. The fake grass isn't a terrible option when it's cooler, because it doesn't stink as much as in the heat. In the summer, you just smell it too much, no matter how much you spray it down. What I do for artificial turf on the balcony is lay a tarp down underneath first, then layer rubber mulch on top in a slant for drainage, then spray Nature's Miracle Urine Destroyer liberally, then lay the fake grass with drainage holes over it. The dog still prefers fresh live grass, obviously, especially if the turf gets too old with urine smells. You really have to spray it down frequently to minimize this, so I have to go with live grass products in the summer. Tips on getting your dog to use grass: Reward and praise every time you see your dog go inside the box--I use his favorite salmon treats Don't move the box too much, it's confusing to puppies Take him/her to the box on leash right after a nap and give the verbal command you use outside for elimination; be patient if he doesn't go Spray with pheromone products; I've never tried it, but some say it works--I just catch some of his pee in a poop bag when he goes outside and use as a "reminder" when he hasn't used the box in a while *Gently* ease the poop off the grass once it's hardened somewhat, to avoid mashing it into the grass; makes it last clean longer After removing poop in the mornings, spray or mist it down with a spray bottle liberally; this also helps clean off the urine If your puppy frequently goes near the box but just outside it, limit his fenced in area more (had this problem when I started in the kitchen) For accidents outside box, use Nature's Miracle to clean up the scent so that he isn't tempted to start a habit

LOVED this product! We had never used it before until realizing that we were going on vacation to a hotel surrounded by concrete and pavement. Our dog much prefers to do his business on grass, so we were a tad worried by the lack of grass at our destination. We received the DoggieLawn two days before our departure and hauled it in the car with us to our destination. The DoggieLawn comes in a nice slender, sturdy box. Very easy to pack in our medium sized SUV along with the dog crate and luggage. When we arrived at the hotel, we set up the DoggieLawn on the porch. It took him a few times before he would use it, but once he got the hang of it, he used it consistently. It helped to keep his potty routine in place, even while traveling! He both pooped (at times diarrhea due to travel anxiety) and peed on it. As reported in other reviews, once the pooty pile is cleaned up, there is no smell! With the diarrhea, we did our best to clean up the grass using a doggy poop bag and then used water to rinse the rest into the grass/dirt underneath. We purchased two doggielawns because we have a Border Collie and wanted to be assured that when he transformed into poop mode, the poop landed on the grass and not miss the box and land on the floor! We kept the doggielawn in the box and just set them side-by-side. At the end of our trip (6 days), I was tempted to bring the two doggielawns back with us (again no smell), however, we did not have the room due to purchasing novelty items while on vacation. I left some money in the hotel room with a note asking maid service to please dispose of the grass. I live in a rural area, so I don't have a daily need for a doggielawn, however, it seriously made me re-think our approach to this winter (upstate NY) and standing outside waiting for him to do his business when during frigid temps! Why stand outside in freezing temps when we could just set up a little "lawn" in our house? Cleaning up frozen poopsicles is NOT fun! This product is amazing and to know that you could probably plant the grass when you are done with it and recycle the cardboard, means no waste! Had we had more time before the vacation, I would have purchased an extra lawn for him to practice on and get used to.

Great idea but can’t be used inside or your whole house will smell. At least you can see and have odor control with puppy pads.

Great grass pad for my miniature dachshund as she was under 1lb when I got her and overwhelmed with going potty outside with all the sounds noises cars and any people or other dogs outside. I get one of these about every 6 weeks and she has been faithful with using it. I don't have to worry about snow, rain or any bad weather and she has access to it 24/7. Delivery takes about 1 week, so I plan it to come about the time I need to throw out the old one. It comes in a fitted cardboard box so I switch the lid underneath it, then when it's time to throw it out, put the lid back on top and tape it up to carry it to the outdoor trash bin.
