HJC Smart 20B Communication System Single Set

A great Sena based intercom system but with a few flaws which I’ll discuss.Fitting:Although a little fiddly, fitting is simple enough. It involves unclipping the various sections of padding from your HJC helmet (in my case the i90 modular helmet). You feed the thin wires into predefined cut outs & slot the mic & speakers into their housings. Once the padding is re-clipped into place you’d never know the wires were there. The battery screws into a pre-defined slot at the rear of the helmet. You need to remove the blanking plate from the helmet & screw the battery in its place.Pairing:It took me a little while to pair the intercom to my iPhone as the instructions weren’t clear enough for me to determine that I needed to hold the button in for a further 5 seconds beyond the point it prompts you to pair with another intercom.Charging:The way this device charges is fundamentally flawed but not impossible to work around. You plug the supplied cable into the battery and charge using a standard USB charger. Simple enough you’d think but there’s a big problem. Once charged the light changes from red to blue. The issue is that the blue light is powered from the battery, not from the charger. This means that if you try & charge overnight, you’ll likely find the intercom battery somewhat depleted by morning as the blue light will have drained the battery (even though it’s still plugged into the charger). A quick search on the internet proved my theory and apparently this is normal (if you can call it normal….). You just need to keep an eye on things and unplug as soon as it’s charged. Not the end of the world.Real world use:I purchased two units & use them daily as my son also rides. Range is great providing that there’s a clear line of sight between you and the other rider and audio is clear and loud enough to hear at 70mph. Music is passable but I didn’t purchase these for that reason. Phone calls are clear & people can hear you at the other end of the line even at speed.Verdict:Despite its flaws I still recommend the HJC 20B due to its clean integration with my HJC i90 helmets & the clarity of intercom & calls.

Bought this expensive unit as it is recommended for HJC helmet. Looks fabulous, if only it worked. Bluetooth will not connect, and battery won’t charge.
