Melissa & Doug Magnetic Wooden Puzzle Game Set: Fishing and Bug Catching

Great quality and kids loved it.

This puzzle keeps my 20 month old daughter entertained for up to 45 minutes. (Which is forever, in toddler minutes). It is our favorite puzzle so far. Very simple to use. I actually did not show her how to use it. She figured it out on her own, which is part of the learning process. Relatively safe. The magnet on the poles cannot be easily swallowed. However, I would still caution to supervise kids around magnetic toys. I agree with those who say, it would have been nice to have a picture under each puzzle piece. However, this toy was worth it regardless. My solution was to trace each puzzle piece on a piece of paper and add my own sketch of each animal. It works for us. In the future, I plan on adding the color words on the inside, so she has to match the pieces to the words.

These were Christmas presents last year for our now three-year old and may very well be her favorite of all her toys, puzzles and games. Both the fishing and bug-catching puzzles use magnets to "catch" the puzzle pieces. These continue to be fun for our little lady as she first was enamored by the "magic" that magnets can add to her adventures. Having played with these for over a year now, she still loves to catch the bugs and fishes; however, she has taken it to the next level by calling out the piece she caught. To her credit, she is now able to say "sting ray," "squid" or centipede" which far exceeds her daddy's expectations. Just another outstanding product by Melissa & Doug who are at the top rung of the child development toy market for good reason.

These are perfect for my 3 year old son! He loves catching his fishies! He can now name all the animals and asks to play with this daily. Of course Melissa & Doug is amazing quality. And this is a great price.

Originally we bought these puzzles for my son as a 2nd birthday present, he immediately loved the "fishing" mechanism. My experience with Melissa and Doug toys told me this would be a durable , well made toy. They did not disappoint! These puzzles have made it through a year of use and abuse they still hold up and look new! He's put a fair amount of effort into this toy and can now get the shapes to go in. It's demonstrated multiple levels of play, transitioning well between developmental stages. This is a toy he'll love for years to come. I loved it so much I recently bought these for my nephews 2nd birthday,too!

The pieces are bright and colorful and very sturdy. The magnets are strong and work well. Edges of pieces are really smooth.

I purchased the Melissa and Doug Fishing and Bug Catching set over the holidays to give to my then 20 month old daughter for Christmas. In short, my daughter really enjoys playing these games and has quickly "caught" on how the catch the fish and bugs using the magnetic pole and net. What's really nice about the set is that with a little imagination from the parents, it provides many different opportunities for toddler age children-- hand eye coordination to pick up the pieces, spatial recognition in putting pieces back into place, vocabulary and education if parents what to talk about the different animals or colors or shapes, learning about taking turns with parents, and so forth. The set is well made, with nice colorful pictures overlaid on wood pieces and board. As one reviewer pointed out, the edges of the pieces are subject to some wear with extended use, but in the end, it's not preventing us from playing the game and my daughter doesn't mind. One of the more frequent complaints is that the spaces where the pieces fit do not have pictures to indicate which fish or bug goes in that location. While I do think that was an unfortunate oversight, we've been using that opportunity to teach our daughter about looking at the shape of the piece and figuring out which space looks like the same shape. She has caught on with time, with some success. In the end, my daughter loves the game and will request to play it. As with most things at this age, it only holds her attention for 15 to 30 minutes or so, but she continues to come back to it on a regular basis. I suspect she'll outgrow the game in a year or so, but for now, we're happy with the purchase.

My little one loves it. I got it when she has been 2 years old and she did not show much interest. But now at 2 1/2 she loves it.

My boys don't love puzzles but this finally got them into into it !! "Fishing" for the prices and racing to put them back!! Game changer for us !!

Great for fine motor skills. Wooden quality is great and magnets are strong. Definitely a great gift.
