A Hot Meal in the Cold Wilderness
When I first saw the Mountain House Breakfast Skillet, I was suspicious-freeze-dried sausage and eggs didn’t sound particularly appetizing. However, after a chilly pre-dawn camping trip when I could see my breath, I decided to give it a try, and the smell of cooking peppers and hash browns wafting from that tiny pouch actually surprised me. This meal comes with eggs, sausage, peppers, and shredded potatoes, all freeze-dried for easy preparation and convenience. To make it, all I did was boil some water in my portable stove and pour it in the pouch. After waiting about 10 minutes, it was all ready to eat. Although it costs a bit more than a granola bar, the under-$10 price feels fair for the quality and simplicity it provides, especially when you’re miles away from a kitchen. I expected something rubbery or bland, but the potatoes had texture, the sausage had a smoky flavor, and it was surprisingly filling. It’s also gluten-free, which doesn’t necessarily affect me, but it is good for those whose diets adhere to it. I loved how light, easy, and genuinely tasty it was, though it is slightly salty and requires boiling water since there’s no cold prep option. Overall, I’d give the Mountain House Breakfast Skillet a solid 5 out of 5 stars and would definitely purchase it again. It’s perfect for campers, hikers, or even an emergency food supply-if you want a hot, homemade-style breakfast in the wilderness, this one delivers.

Excellent taste & convenient to make/store
I don’t backpack/camp. I buy this (and other Mountain House products) because it tastes great. It’s easy to make, convenient to store, and has a long shelf life. Perfect emergency food.

Not too shabby at all for a freeze dried breakfast.
I bought these to try for a solo camping trip and I was very impressed. Admittedly, I did not have the best measurement tools for the water, boiling or cooking apparatus. However mountain House’s breakfast skillet was still good regardless. Definitely easy to get cooked up Just add boiling water and mix It doesn’t get simpler than that. Definitely a good amount of food and pretty filling smells exactly like breakfast skillet I’ve made it home all the same ingredients just freeze dried. Though I would say the most concerning thing would be the water mixture You can end up with a kind of soupy texture so just be sure about water measurement. However, in my experience, this did not affect taste too much more so texture, but it was still good despite the measurement setback. If you’re looking for a simple easy inconvenient way to get a hearty meal on a solo backpacking trip or with company without having to carry too much on your person then I would definitely recommend mountain house. Freeze dried meals for the convenience and simplicity doesn’t get any easier than boiling water, stirring up and chowing down.

Tip-top!
When I was in college, I, “accidentally” found my way into an old Cold War bomb shelter. There were lots of freeze dried meals, so I liberated a few, being a poor college student. After eating a couple of them, I decided that it would actually be better to die in a nuclear holocaust than to have to survive on those things. fast forward to 2025. I’ve tried a whole bunch of camping meals by many different manufacturers and they all have left me wanting for a variety of reasons. Either the food was bland or it was just disgusting or the packaging was bad. I heard that this brand was supposed to be really good. A friend of mine who is a nurse sent me a text message one night saying that she was hungry but the cafeteria was closed and nobody would deliver food that late. I sent her four of these meals, all different, and suggested that she keep one in her bag and one in her car for just such an occasion. She told me that they were delicious. I bought a bunch of them for myself and I have to agree. These meals are wayyyyy better than anything I’ve ever tried. They have great flavor, great texture and are substantial in size. The packaging is awesome. It is thick, heavy material with a zip lock that really holds in the moisture. This is important for two reasons. I add the hot water, seal the bag and let it sit for five minutes and then I turn it over upside down for another five minutes so that the remaining water drains down to the top of the bag and hydrates everything up there. I have yet to have a single drop leak out. Really a great value for the money at 10 bucks. I keep them around for those situations where I’m working at 2 o’clock in the morning and I am really hungry, but don’t want to take the time to make food. I can get a great meal in 10 minutes.

Mountain House Breakfast Skillet – A Culinary Adventure in Regret
Mountain House Breakfast Skillet – A Culinary Adventure in Regret Ah yes, the Mountain House Breakfast Skillet — for when you want to experience the thrill of eating a meal that tastes like it was cooked by someone who’s only ever heard of breakfast. To its credit, it does exactly what it says: it exists and it’s food-like. Eggs? Check. Potatoes? Technically. Sausage? Sort of. If your goal is to feel like you’re on a rugged mountain expedition while sitting on your couch questioning your life choices, this is the product for you. The first bite hits like a nostalgic memory of something you once liked — then reality sets in. The texture is somewhere between “campfire nostalgia” and “packing foam soaked in regret.” Add too little water, and you’re crunching on hash-brown gravel. Add too much, and congratulations, you’ve made “breakfast soup.” But hey, credit where it’s due — it’s filling. Mostly because your appetite gives up halfway through. ⭐ 5 stars for convenience. ⭐ 1 star for taste. ⭐ Bonus star for making you appreciate real bacon, real eggs, and civilization. Final Verdict: Perfect for backpacking, emergencies, or reminding yourself that you should’ve brought Pop-Tarts instead.

I eat better than at home!!
Nothing like breakfast after waking up in nature. It is so easy to use and delicious and gives me energy. There is rather large meal portions. It is hard to eat it all it says two servings but not sure how you would heat it up again so probably just eat as much as you can!!

Needs hot water
Probably need to read better but have to boil water and add to pouch. Not a self heating version
