Can it be used without the top support bar?

Yes it can be used without the top support bar. The bar is not necessary to the structural integrity of the machine. I don't always use the side panels . I have a dog daycare, and some dogs new to the device are scared of the panels. While with other dogs, it helps to keep them focused forward. I use the support bar to attach the leash to help keep the dogs going forward and I can be a bit hands free. The more comfortable the dog gets, the more you can decide whether you need side panels, support bar, leash or any other training/teaching aids. I like this machine. Simple. Functional. Sturdy. Easy to assemble.

How do you use the folded patented space saving feature? do i have to take it all apart again? i can't figure it out. thanks.

I returned mine for this very reason-couldn't get it to fold!

My dog gained a lot of weight after his knee surgery, would this be appropriate for him to use for his rehab and to lose some weight?

I'm sure it would, but it takes a dog time just to get use it. Our Labrador likes it, but our English pointer does not.
