My contractor says that this product needs a linear drain. Could you tell me if this is needed?

I connected mine to old drain. Just connected it and make sure you mortar floor flows into direction of drain.

How does this install to the drain. Currently my drain is pvc and 1 1/2 inch. Can this fit over the drain and use silicone?
