Can I add a back rest to it later? ..

It doesn't have that option. Unless you can find something sort of universal backrest.

I am concerned about the base. Does it feel secure to sit on? ...as in not rolling out from under the sitter

It feels secure enough but the seat is tiny. I’m a small person and I find it uncomfortable. Bought the just a few months ago and I’m looking for a replacement.
