Traveller: Starports (MGP3857)

Geek Book
This is a great rule book for those who like TRAVELLER data. Besides the usual definitions of the job and components of a starport, it takes a unique approach to designing a starport by using 'modules' which like the terminal or the concourse area are scaled, and thus an area can be calculated and a map produced.Great fun for geeks. One thing... all components are listed except for a powerplant, the Referee will have to wing it.

Not the best of the Traveller books.
I was a little disappointed with this book. It also had some good stuff along how Starports work and some great ideas for how multiple starports could exist in the same system and good variations. However, building Starports came down to have High Guard, which is a much better book and really could have done most of the building without Starports in the first place. My biggest problem though is High Guard mentions Starports as being 100,000 tons or bigger, and all the examples in the Starports book were 10,000 tons or smaller. The combat system v. Starports wasn't well thought out at all, and there was a fairly big section on how to run a starport, which I doubt will come in handy that often.

Situationaly usefull.
This book goes into incredible depth on starports. From creation and designs to the populace and governance. The format and layout like all of Mongoose's Traveller book is great. The art is incredible, even when it is simple line drawings. There is an incredible amount of small details that can be adventure hooks along with premade plans and NPC's.Now why I gave it 3 of 5 stars. My personal opinion is that this manual will be of limited use. My adventurers HQ is based on a starport, so I was abel to design a massive sprawling enviornment to make the homebase more than just a place to give debriefs and pick up new missions. SO for this it was well beyond adequate. Now as the the story will continue, I find it diffucult to see how this book will be useful in the long run.So it is GREAT at what it does. Unfortunatly it really does seem like a one trick pony.
