Adult Urinary & Hairball Control Dry Cat Food | #1 Veterinarian Recommended, Chicken Recipe, 7 lb. Bag

This food has been great for my cat. After switching to Hill’s Science Diet Adult Urinary & Hairball Control, I noticed fewer hairballs and better overall digestion within a few weeks. My cat seems to really enjoy the taste too, which is a huge plus because she can be picky with dry food. I also like having the added urinary support for peace of mind, especially for indoor cats. The kibble size is good, the ingredients seem high quality, and her coat has looked healthier and shinier since starting this food. It’s a little more expensive than regular cat food, but for the results and quality, I think it’s worth it.

Long story short, my cats gets so stressed from traveling that she gives herself UTIs (WTF nature?). I bought this for her to mitigate that, along with an oral urinary heath supplement. She LOVES this food. I used to leave dry food out for her 24/7, but I can't do that with this food because she'll eat the whole thing at once. Her urinary issues did clear up, but it's hard to tell if it was because of this food or just good ole time. Here are my tips if your cat is having urinary issues: 1. If it's a one-off incident, investigate why it happened! If it's stress-related, which is common, address that first. When traveling, cover the carrier with a blanket to avoid sensory overload. Try spraying the carrier with a pheromone spray like Feliway, which allegedly calms cats. You can even try a pheromone scent plug-in if you want. When kitty is in a new place, isolate them in a room where they can unwind without being disturbed. Google has plenty of resources for how to reduce stress in cats! 2. WATER WATER WATER! Entice you cat to drink water. Cats dislike water sources near their food, so try placing another water bowl away from the feeding area. (This is a natural instinct, as water sources near food / meat in the wild are often contaminated). Give fresh water every day. Try a water fountain. (Again, instinct - in the wild, running water is less likely to be contaminated than stagnant water). 3. Wet food! This kibble is okay, but cats with UTIs NEED wet food! They often don't drink enough water on their own, so incorporating it in their wet food is the best solution. And use a quality wet food - with the nutrients they need, avoiding ash and fillers. Fun fact, CATS DONT NEED ANY CARBS OR VEGGIES! Their food should be all protein and fat - any diced carrots and peas are to make YOU feel better, not the cat. Experiment with adding extra water to the wet food! (Some cats like it, some do not). Maximize your cat's water intake as much as possible. But I wouldn't suggest adding water to dry food. It gets pretty gross, like soggy cereal. 4. Consider an oral supplement. I tried a liquid supplement available on Amazon. My cat avoided her food when I added the liquid, so I administered it directly. To 'force feed' a cat, you just quickly pop the supplement in the throat (not the mouth, where they can spit it out). I prop my kitty's mouth open with one hand and administered the liquid with the other (but I have a very patient, tolerant cat). 5. Keep that litter CLEAN! It's likely your frustrated cat will be peeing often, and possibly peeing outside the litter box. Mitigate this by keeping the litter pristine and possibly adding another little box. There's also a product called "Cat Attract" that allegedly attracts cats to their litter, though I've never used it personally. 6. Finally, track their potty behaviors as much as possible. If urinary issues persist, especially in male cats where they can get total urethral blockages and actually die, go to the vet. Have a log of all the times your cat visited the litter box the day before. Note how much they pee, if it's discolored, etc. To anyone who ended up on this page because their cat is having pee-pee problems, good luck! Just stick with it. <3

In general, I love this cat food. It’s great for my cat’s needs and is truly quality cat food. When I adopted him, he was very overweight so we started with the weight control option from this brand and then got him switched to the hairball and urinary tract one once he got to a healthy weight. Before I got him on this brand of food, his coat was very dull and rough and not very full. But after about a month, it became super shiny, soft, and healthy. He has a sensitive stomach but this formula is gentle enough that he doesn’t get sick. The only thing I don’t like is that the last two bags I got now have kibbles that are 1/3 the size. So he doesn’t have to chew them as much which causes him to eat too fast and throw up. I don’t understand why they changed the kibble size but I’m pretty upset about it. In general, though, the formula is fantastic for maintaining your cat’s nutrition without them getting any fillers that can cause weight gain. And it doesn’t have two pungent of a smell so if you’re sensitive to the smell of cat food, this one is a lot less fragrant.

Once a cat has developed urinary crystals the safest thing to do is to feed a diet specially formulated to reduce magnesium. Your options are pretty much limited to the biggest companies who offer these specialized formulas either as exorbitantly expensive "presecription" diets or "over the counter" versions like this one that are more more less the same thing. Of course the more wet food you can get into any cat the better and that's especially true if the urinary tract, bladder or kidneys are at all compromised. But many cats are addicted to dry food and let's face it, it's cheaper and more convenient than feeding exclusively canned. A lot of people look down on products from big companies like Hill's, Purina and Royal Canin because they believe the ingredients are inferior. Be that as it may, one thing the big companies watch very closely are sensible mineral profiles. Some of the brands that purport to include the most meat also provide an excess of certain minerals that will do more harm than good for a cat that has chronic issues. So as long as you can overcome your biases about gluten and grain, a food like this is the safest choice. Now I happen to be a fan of Purina but I feed this to my two cats who have had episodes of urinary crystals. Why? Because for some reason the Purina OTC urinary formulas (dry) are *very* high in calories, over 450 a cup. My indoor cats would gain way too much weight eating them regularly. This SD formula comes in at only 320 calories/cup so I can feed them more without them getting fat. So this is the only dry food they get and for many months now they've been healthy with no recurrence of the urinary problems. I have noticed that they usually drink water immediately after eating it. I suppose SD is deliberately making them thirsty so they get the extra water they need to flush out their system. Frankly, I wish I could go back to feeding a less expensive product but this is a lot cheaper than a visit to the vet and the cats really like it. I have also fed the canned version of this but there is only one flavor available and the cats seem to prefer the Pro Plan urinary cans more. The canned formulas for both brands have about the same amount of calories.

The new version is a hit with my cats. They used to always leave the bigger kibbles to the last minute to eat and often there would be stray kibbles remaining at the next feeding time. Now, the bowls are cleared at every feeding. I haven't noticed any throwing up either, yet. I will update if that happens of course. **update.. they stopped eating it and they did start to throw it up - So, I will have to stop feeding this at this time. -

Excellent cat food! Best on the market for urinary health and hairball management. Been using it to feed my cat for over a decade, but suddenly (a few months prior) they changed the formula, size and color of kibble, and did so without warning or indicating the change initially. I give this food 4 stars for that reason. I contacted Hill's Science Diet with a very detailed explanation of my concerns, and was only given some long-winded answer attesting to the fact that this is tested and vetted for nutritional content to be the best. But, I find that information to be false, considering the nutritional value of this new ingredient is not good for cats in the quantity provided. The size of kibble change is drastic, which abruptly changed the portions, affecting those cats on diets, and reduces the dental benefits of chewing larger peices. Do I still recommend this food, yes. It still stands above the rest of it's kind for ingredients, cost, and especially calorie content. However, this change was unnecessary and seems to be a way to reduce cost on their end, while increasing the cost on our end, with size and ingredients, all while rising the cost per bag steadily over the years.

Excellent dry product to maintain urinary tract health in cats n kittens. I keep dry food out at all times and this is what I use for my 25 rescue cats. No hairball, no uti issues, just playful, happy rescues.

Solid quality kibble that’s held up as a staple in our cat’s diet. We’ve seen real healthiness benefits too, especially fewer hairball and urinary issues since making the switch, which was our main concern going in. Took a few days to dial in the automatic feeder to the new formula size, but once that was done, it’s like it never changed. Easy to recommend if your cat needs a little extra digestive and urinary support.

Dont believe the negative reviews saying it is not suitable for Indian cats. All my 11 Indian cats and the cats who come to my house are eating this and they absolutely love this as well. Some cats may hesitate at first but you gotta go slow with them by mixing it with their old food, bu they will surely love it once they get used to it. My cats have gained healthy weight and better coat and less fur fall after they start eating this. Definitely go for it.

Confirmed my belief this morning when Peco coughed up her first hairball in more than a year. When she was first adopted I had her on the basic Adult Formula then went on to Dental (didn’t like the taste) and she coughed up her first hairball. Being a new cat mum I took her to the emergency vet who confirmed it’s the dreaded hairball. I switched her food right after to Urinary Hairball Control and no issues since. However, I started introducing Perfect Weight over the last few weeks because we’re a little bit over our goal weight. Then came the hairball this morning. So yup, I think this formula definitely does its job!
