### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Not just for beginners
*by K***P on 19 April 2026*

A long review but for something costing this much, it's worth the effort. I'm writing this as an intermediate player starting again as a near beginner after not picking a guitar up for nearly four decades I quickly became aware that my old Eko Ranger, bought 55 years ago and languishing in the loft for the last 38 years, while still playing well, couldn't compete with modern guitars in terms of tone and volume. Since my return to the scene, I've had the good fortune to have a play on Taylor, Martin and Faith guitars and decided I needed an upgrade. Although with my mediocre playing skills I couldn't justify buying one of these, so I’m pleased to say that the FG800 I have bought at less than a third of the price holds its own against all of them. It really is a pleasure to play. Yamaha seem to be deliberately targeting this guitar at beginners which is a mystery to me as it deserves a wider audience. Perhaps they want more advanced players to fork out for their more expensive models? The build quality and finish in the main is excellent. I've been playing it now for a few weeks and I've got used to the rougher feel of the matte neck (or has it got smoother with playing?). The neck width at 43mm is a little narrower than I've been used to and the 400mm radius fretboard is much flatter but again I'm getting used to it. Tuning heads are OK. Frets are smooth and polished, and the ends, while maybe could be rounded off a bit, are not sharp. The string height at the first fret with a capo on the third fret is about 0.1-0.15mm which suits me fine. The neck relief is about perfect for me at 0.15mm at the 6th fret with a capo on the first fret and the strings held down at the 12th, so no truss rod adjustments needed yet, although an Allen key is provided. Now for a few negatives. The main problem was the action which was too high for me. Also there was a noticeable gap at the back of the plastic saddle of about 0.25mm and when I checked I found a 2.75mm saddle had been put in the 3mm slot. This caused it to lean over ever so slightly towards the top of the guitar which is not good. With these two issues in mind, I replaced the saddle with a 3mm bone one I had knocking around, which was a much tighter fit, sits more upright, and at the same time allowed me to reduce the action to what I prefer: about 2.25mm clearance on the bottom E at the 12th fret and 1.75mm on the top E. While I had the strings off I took the opportunity to put some lemon oil on the fretboard which was looking a bit pale and dry, and to rub a pencil along the nut slots to stop the strings sticking.. Replacing the saddle and lowering the action has massively improved the feel and playability with no string rattle, even with DGCFAD tuning. Unfortunately I couldn't detect any significant difference in the tone or sustain with the new bone saddle which was disappointing. So much for bone saddles. Even more unfortunate was that replacing the dodgy saddle with a thicker, more upright one didn’t improve the intonation. The top E and B strings at the 12th fret were OK but the remaining 4 still got progressively more flat, much as they did with the original saddle. This suggests the saddle slot has been routed at too sharp an angle. I had bought the replacement saddle ready compensated and there was no scope for modification. To try to remedy this situation I bought a blank bone saddle and filed the compensation in myself with the 4 bottom strings as far forward as I could. Fortunately this was just enough to get pretty much perfect intonation. I've played my new baby out in the big wide world at a few acoustic Open Mics and I can confirm that it's plenty loud enough and sounds really good either strumming with a plectrum or fingerstyle, competing well with the very expensive Martin it’s playing along with. In conclusion, despite the bit of tweaking required, I'm very satisfied with no regrets. OK it needed a bit of work but I could easily have spent two or three times the money and not got a better guitar. It will be looked down on by the snobby Martins and Taylors it's going to meet but I still consider it money well spent. Would recommend.
