Dr. Hynek's insights about the strengths and weakness of the original Air Force Project Blue Book are invaluable. As a consultant to them on the subject of astronomical potential causes and explanations he knew first hand many of the things later researchers have only been able to ascertain by evaluating the released documents and other sources. His questions are still valid today and many are still as unanswered as they were in when he wrote this groundbreaking work. No collection on the subject of unidentifieds on the ground or in the skies could be complete without this work. As his children point out in the forward to this new addition, Dr. Hynek was a man of science and he did not "believe in UFO's" , he traveled from skepticism to a place where he "accepted the validity of a growing amount of compelling UFO reports" (page viii). His commitment to science would allow him to do no less. In this work, Hynek examines attitudes and some cases he believed deserved better and more scientifically honest investigations, and in less detail, offers restrained but frank comments about the opportunities that could have advanced science but were, instead, used for more political agendas (The Robertson Panel and the Condon Report). The Hynek UFO Report, The Authoritative Account of the Project Blue Book Cover-Up (2020) is a timely return of a monumental voice and sterling reference to the renewed discussion of the topic of Unidentified Flying Objects (or more recent term Unidentified Aerial Phenomena).

Absolutely an amazing read for anyone experiencing nonhuman intelligence and searching for context. Synchronicity. I found it surprising condon didn't appear to read his own report.

I was born in 1953 or the earliest days of UFO flaps. My dad, who worked on space program projects, had an interest in Astronomy and UFOs. He was hardly a nutter or a fanatic, but rather someone just plain curious, as I'm sure many were back in the 1960s when I grew up. I distinctly remember the great Michigan UFO Flap of 1966 when I was thirteen. My dad followed the story intensely and we discussed it-me, with a certain amount of fear. After all, aliens in that time period were never all that friendly and a far cry from Speilberg's cute little E.T. It was during the Michigan Flap that I first learned of J. Allen Hynek. Hynek was the Air Force's consultant on Project Blue Book. Hynek's "job" was not so much getting to the truth of UFO sightings, but rather to find a simple explanation for them. In the book I'm now reviewing Hynek explains his job and his change of heart that he had in the course of being involved in Project Bluebook. In 1966 however, Hynek was still doing what the "company" wanted, that is, finding something that could explain away sightings. The Michigan case of 1966 is still a case that is surrounded by mystery despite the fact that there were many professional type observers to the events. The media of the time took their testimony seriously and as I said, I recall it being a huge deal. Hynek spent what I'd call a minimal amount of time on the case. His verdict was "swamp gas." My dad didn't by it then and to this day people that study UFO phenomena do not either. I heard many years later (Hynek died in 1986) that Hynek documented his time in Blue Book with a couple of books including the one I'm reviewing. His change of heart is apparent in the book, although he only eludes to the Michigan case of my childhood. Hynek's purpose in writing the book was to expose the Air Force's rather insincere efforts to investigate UFOS. Hynek cites many encounters of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd kinds to show that often times the official explanation didn't line up with available evidence. At times, the Air Force allowed "unidentified" as the explanation in the closest they ever came in saying, we just don't know. So, what prompted me to read Hynek's book that was published over 30 years ago. The short version was watching Senator Marco Rubio of Florida discuss the most recent UFO flaps involving our own US Navy. The videos have been out there for months now and apparently the government is finally admitting to being perplexed. The events surrounding the USS Omaha are particularly unsettling as options to explain the UFOS are rather limited. It's been enough that the military is required to issue some kind of report this summer on what is going on. That's what made me curious about what J. Allen Hynek said about about government reports back in the days of Blue Book. The question today is will the military tell the truth? What will have changed since Blue Book? It appears that the military and government's options are limited to 1) we really don't know, 2) the UFOS are of a foreign power with far more technology than we have, 3) the UFOs are ours and experimental or they are extraterrestrial. In other words, the same possibilities that Blue Book dealt with so long ago. There is one more possibility that was not thought of, that I know of, back in the days of Blue Book. That possibility is the one of inter-dimension craft and beings. That possibility raises a lot of issues; including theological ones. Enjoyed reading this book! Lots of info! As an aside, you may want to read the nonfiction book, The UFO of God, by Chris Bledsoe.

I wanted to read Dr. Hynek's book but didn't want to spend hundreds of $$$ for a rare hard copy. So, I got the Kindle version for a few dollars. The content is great, but the digital version must have been scanned and run through a text-recognition program. It's not the best. There are many misspellings, and the flow of the work is cut by numerous footnots that aren't clearly marked as such, making reading difficult when the topic changes dramatically between what appear to be paragraphs. You can figure it out, but it's often not easy. Let the buyer beware re: the Kindle version, but kudos to the late Dr. Hynek for writing this fascinating book.

After watching Project Blue Book and being interested in blue book since I first heard of it in the early 70s, this book deepens the experience after watching the tv series. I never realized Hynek was the inspiration behind Close Encounters and actually created the descriptions. Worth the read for any one interested in strange phenomena.

Pretty honest book from his point of view, references to check for further insight. Interesting read.

Dr J. Allen Hynek, one of the leading consultants to USAF infamous "UFO reports", reviews some of the most controversial and intriguing cases from Project Blue Book and the so called Condon Report. Dr Hynek does not set out to prove that aliens exist and are here or that all UFO witnesses are liars but to expose the unscientific way reports were analyzed, even by well qualified experts, and the confusing and often depressing nature of "official" UFO investigation, caught between personal feuds, lack of funding, low priority and the will to put the matter to rest as quickly as possible. This is not a book engaging in wild speculations or trying to give all the answers right now: it will give you just the dry facts. And that's why it's highly recommended.

Très bonne compilation, même si elle est loin d'être exhaustive. Déjà, l'auteur envisageait une autre explication que celle qui était adoptée par d'autres au premier degré, à savoir que les extraterrestres n'avaient peut-être rien à y voir...
