You can just choose to use a slot or not. If you only have 1 slot, you can position it on the side where you want to use it. I think the length of the board is more important. I actually use 2 different length boards for my mom. I use this one to transfer her from the wheelchair to the bed and another (shorter) one - with no slots - to transfer her from the bed to the wheelchair. I don't think the size of the person (smallish elderly lady) is as significant as the distance that you need to transfer. Hope that helps! **Q: length of board?** A: The board is 8" wide by 30" long & accommodates weight to 440 lbs. because it's about 3/4" thick. My husband is 6' 1" & weighs 250+ lbs - and accommodates him. Hope this helps! **Q: How long is it?** A: The product description says it is 30.3 inches long, but I measured mine at 29.5 inches. My husband is 6'1" & weighs more than 250 lbs. This is a very strong board to accommodate him. The price was good plus the shipping was excellent. He used it while going to outpatient rehab in a hospital and it seems as good if not better than the ones the hospital furnishes.
