While not yet available, 4K displays and sources are sure to become popular in the future. This receiver is capable of passing the 4K data from the source to the display, for image clarity far beyond present standards. HDMI with 3D and Audio Return Channel 3D means the receiver can handle 3D signal data. The Audio Return Channel function enables data to be sent and received via the same HDMI cable, so you can hear the sound from the TV via a single HDMI cable, with no need for an extra optical cable. Network Functions This AV receiver provides a variety of network functions that enable you to access more sources and also enhance operation. You can connect the receiver to a PC to enjoy Internet Radio. The AV Controller app (from iTunes App Store or Android Market) lets you control various functions from your iPod, iPhone, iPad or Android phones. AV Controller App for Easy, Convenient Operation This AV Receiver lets you use the Yamaha AV Controller app that is downloadable from the iTunes App Store or Android Market to control power on/off and volume, select input and DSP modes and operate other functions from an iPod, iPhone, iPad or Android phones. A tablet version is also available. AirPlay Allows Streaming Music to AV receiver This AV receiver supports AirPlay, which means they can accept wireless music streaming from iPod touch, iPhone or iPad, as well as from iTunes on Macs or PCs. This makes it easy to enjoy music from your mobile devices or computer on your home theater system. You can use view metadata such as song title, artist name as well as album art* via AV receiver's on-screen display. *Some models don't support album art display. HDMI CEC for Easy Operation Another benefit of HDMI is the availability of CEC functionality. When the unit is connected to a CEC compatible TV, it will turn on and off together with the TV, and you can use the TV remote to control the volume. CEC also provides advanced functionality with other components. For example, you can use the receiver’s remote unit to control player functions like Skip and Stop. *All connected devices must be HDMI CEC compatible. Some CEC compatible TVs/players may not work. YPAO Sound Optimization for Automatic Speaker Setup YPAO analyzes the room acoustics and adjusts various audio parameters for optimum sound in just a few minutes. It’s like having a professional installer calibrate your system. USB Digital Connection for iPod, iPhone and iPad on the Front Panel A USB port on the front panel allows convenient connection of an iPod/iPhone/iPad, which also charges when connected. Because the digital signal from the iPod/iPhone/iPad is transmitted directly to the AV receiver, there is no signal loss or interference, so you enjoy the best possible sound quality. In addition, you can use the receiver’s remote control unit to operate the iPod/iPhone/iPad music playback functions. SCENE for One-Touch Start Pressing a SCENE button powers on the AV Receiver and selects the input source and DSP mode. You can re-set the buttons for different sources by selecting a source and DSP mode, then pressing a SCENE button for more than three seconds. HD Audio with CINEMA DSP 3D and Virtual Presence Speaker CINEMA DSP 3D provides a wide, high and dense sound field. HD Audio format decoding lets you enjoy HD Audio sources. Virtual Presence Speaker delivers 3- dimensional sound without actual use of presence speakers. Input Selection in HDMI Standby Through Mode When the AV receiver is in HDMI Standby Through mode, the input source (Blu-ray™ Disc player, game console, etc.) for viewing on the monitor can be changed via the remote control. There’s no need to turn on the AV receiver in order to switch sources. Subwoofer Trim for Improved Sound Imaging The Subwoofer Trim control enhances the low frequencies by avoiding overlap with the front speaker output. This will result in a cleaner, more focused sound stage while providing a seamless frequency response. When subwoofer frequency overlap occurs in conventional systems, the overall sound is “pushed” toward the subwoofer. Subwoofer Trim takes care of this by separating the low subwoofer frequencies cleanly, thus stabilizing the front stage while providing a well-balanced enhanced bass sound. Compressed Music Enhancer When music is encoded into a digitally compressed format like MP3, the frequency response suffers. Yamaha’s Compressed Music Enhancer employs sophisticated digital signal processing using exclusive algorithms to restore what was lost, so the music always sounds the way it should. Adaptive DRC (Dynamic Range Control) Adaptive DRC automatically adjusts the dynamic range of the sound according to the volume level. This ensures that you hear clear dialogue and vocals, and all sound effects at comfortable levels. There is no need to adjust the volume level as you listen; everything from whispers to big explosions will be heard clearly and comfortably at the same volume setting. It also tones down loud TV commercials, and is ideal for low-volume, late-night listening, when you do not want to disturb others. ECO mode lowers power consumption by 20%* Yamaha’s new ECO mode reduces power consumption by about 20%. It can be set from the top of the GUI menu. * Compared to power consumption when ECO mode is off (Yamaha measurement). Selectable Auto Power Down Auto Power Down lets you save energy by selecting to turn off the power after 2, 4, 8 or 12 hours. * Compared to power consumption when ECO mode is off (Yamaha measurement). Low Standby Power Consumption Yamaha makes its receivers with a low standby power consumption of 0.1W in IR Standby mode (1W in HDMI Standby Through mode, 2W in Network Standby mode). Other Notable Advanced Features Charging of iPod, iPhone and iPad via USB when AV Receiver is off iPod/iPhone song titles displayed in English and Western European languages on the front panel Multi language color OSD for improved visibility Audio input assign capability for HDMI and component video input Front panel mini jack input for connecting portable audio player Audio input assign capability for HDMI and component video input 9 selectable subwoofer crossover frequencies Subwoofer phase select / Subwoofer out Initial Volume Setting and Maximum Volume Setting Audio Delay for adjusting Lip-Sync (0-250 ms) 40-station preset tuning / Auto preset tuning Background Video feature (for Radio only)

Great Home Theater System
After careful consideration, I chose to purchase this 897 system for my home. I mainly purchased the system to listen to music with, but it makes movies sound great! I decided to purchase Yamaha after listening to my friends Yamaha receiver and I was blown away. His has been running 5 years strong and has no sign of slowing down. I particularly like to options which come pre-loaded into the receiver for watching sports, sci-fi, spectacular, adventure, gaming selections, pro logic, and the NEO option is awesome too. The only downside is the sub woofer, which technically is not a downside but a preference. I purchased this system bundle because of the air-play capabilities and the 10" sub which comes with the system. Now the sub is not bad, but after listening to my friends sub which he got on special, you will find that you need at least 200+watt sub for music enjoyment to be fully satisfied. The sub handles all rock music and movies just fine, there's no problem there. But if you intend to listen to music which is very bassy, then I suggest you up grade. I will upgrade to the YST-SW315 at a later point. Don't let this discourage you, the speakers kick ass and sound very clean. After all, Yamaha is a premium source for sound enjoyment. Could be happier
I am a lifelong Yamaha fan. I used to sell AV equipment for a living and Yamaha has always featured solid construction and a fabulous sound for the price point, regardless of the price point. They build high end musical instruments so they know what horns, drums and guitars sound like. This is my first new Yamaha unit in over 15 years. I choose to go with a AV-Speaker package because I have never owned a match set and I wanted to experience the effect. 1. This combo arrives in a huge box. I understand that it has to travel from Asia and is designed to shield the equipment from the shipping drops and bounces. This box poses a problem for UPS who left mine sitting in a trailer and told me they were asking the sender for more money. $75 bucks for shipping was not enough. This could be BS but I scheduled this delivery while I was on vacation for a reason. The System. The system was easy to set up and the directions were easy to navigate. I do not like the fact that the sub woofer cannot not be turned on and off by the system and I consider this a major oversight. The rear channel speakers have a unique bracket fitting that is not for sale anywhere in the universe including Yamaha. I am still looking for some kind of adjustable connector so I won't have my new rear channel speakers dangling from a single screw 10 feet off the ground. I consider this another major oversight. I am never been a fan of routing video signals through a audio amp. This unit takes it a step farther because slaves the on screen instructions to the HDMI video output connections. I doubt very seriously that I am the last person on earth with a non digital 1080 tv that uses component video inputs. You also cannot use your HDMI inputs from newer digital sources like Blu rays and digital cable boxes and still use your component video outputs. I saved my biggest grip for the remote. This unit is a master class in how not to configure a remote. Half the buttons will never be used and 1/3 of the buttons are pretty much redundant. The input buttons are numbered verses being titled with names like TV, DVD, CBL, CD and so on. The programming codes for other equipment were not included on my CD-Rom. I had to go on line to Yamaha and down load the codes and still was not able to find a code that operated my TV. The instructions are written in a way that leads you to believe that they actually don't want you programming the remote. Where is the test feature after you enter a code. Eventually I will replace my TV but now I a waiting on the prices to come down on the 4k sets. I am in no hurry since I am the only person in my house who seems to care about horizontal scanning lines and their impact on picture clarity. The sound is what I paid for and the sound is what this review will be ultimately be about. I expected a acoustically flat sound with minimal coloration and I got what I hoped for. My room is 35 by 17 and my rear speakers required 50 feet of 14 gauge wire each based on where I placed them. This unit fills the room with sound and even makes the evening news sound good. My first play was a Jill Scott concert DVD and it froze my wife who immediately sat down and could not move until the concert ended. I would recommend Yamaha and I would recommend this unit. They need to go back to the drawing board on the remote and find me a suitable speaker mounting bracket for the rear channel speakers.

Can't go wrong with this Home Theater In a Box
I bought this as someone who's 10+ year old AV receiver didn't have HDMI or even component inputs and the old speakers were shot and the sub had died long ago. So I was in need of replacing everything. There are nicer receivers and better speakers out there but you're not going to get them for this price and many of the negative reviews are simply people who want the sound of a bigger budget system. (I bought this from Amazon Warehousedeals as "like new" for much less than the regular price)The features:- on screen menus are goofy and have an old windows 3.0 look to them-Airplay works great. That being said I use wired connections for my media devices to connect to my network. Some people have issues when wirelessly connecting the receiver to their networks, it's good practice to use wired connection to permanent hardware like TV's, receivers, BD/DVD players.-YPAO is pretty cool. It gives you a good starting point to fine tuning your audio-Smartphone controller apps work as advertisedI don't know what else to say. it's a good place to start if you're starting from scratch.

Something for everyone
Tech Level: EngineerAudiophile Level: MediumPros:- Set up is fairly easy for a system of this complexity- The design looks great, very modern, but not too flashy- The sound quality is stellar for those of us born without freakish bat hearing- Plenty of HDMI inputs and the addition of 4K pass through (4K will use current HDMI standard ports/cables)- Sound presets work well- The sub woofer can be very, very loud if you want it to be- Speakers are light enough to mount without drilling into studs- iPhone AirPlay is an awesome little perk, the side buttons on your iPhone will control the main system volume- Incredible value for what you getCons:- Big, not for a small room- Needs to be plugged into ethernet port for most of the cool features to work- AirPlay will not work over a media bridge
